Niners interested in Warner
The 49ers have a "legitimate shot" to land veteran free-agent quarterback Kurt Warner, who led the Arizona Cardinals to the Super Bowl this season, a league source said. A second source with knowledge of the situation said there have been no serious contract discussions. No visit has been scheduled that would bring together 49ers representatives and Warner. One source said the 49ers might get together with Warner in the next day or two. If the discussions heat up, the 49ers could send a group of three, including Mike Singletary and general Scot McCloughan, to Arizona to visit with Warner, the source said.

Why the Browns got rid of Winslow
The first significant decision by the Browns' new brain trust is bold and to those fans who want a new direction from their favorite football team -- well, the Browns shipped former Pro Bowl tight end Kellen Winslow to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for a pair of draft picks, a second round pick in 2009 and a fifth- round pick in 2010. The message from General Manager George Kokinis and head coach Eric Mangini is that the Browns wanted no part of an ugly contract dispute with a 25-year-old tight end whom they considered to be self-absorbed. Winslow is tough on coaches and the front office. He's had four knee surgeries, meaning it's difficult for him to practice between games. His shoulder often aches, his body never has been the same since a major motorcycle accident after the 2005 season. Mangini and Kokinis correctly believe the Browns have had too many sideshows in the past few seasons, Winslow being at the center of some of the major distractions, such as demanding at trade at mid-season and claiming the front office treated him "like a piece of meat." On the field, his knee problems have severely hampered his blocking. His speed also has decreased, and he no longer can sprint past defenders to get open as he did a few years ago. In 10 games, he was flagged for seven offensive pass interference penalties - because he had to illegally push away a defender to create space to catch a pass. Another part of Winslow's game that bothered the Browns was his tendency to line up in the wrong spot and not be in the same strategic sentence with the rest of the offense. He was something between a tight end and a wide receiver.

Eagles-Jets trade in works
New York and Philadelphia are completing a trade that will send cornerback Lito Sheppard to the Jets while the Eagles will receive a 2009 fifth-round pick and a 2010 conditional draft pick. The pick could be as high as a second-round choice in 2010 and as low as a fourth. But the Eagles will get two picks and the Jets get Sheppard, who will be in New York Saturday for a physical.

Dawkins-to-Denver not done deal
There appears to be a chance one of the greatest and most popular players in Eagles history will depart the team. Free agent Brian Dawkins visited with the Denver Broncos yesterday, but the 35-year-old safety had not signed with the Broncos as of early today, an NFL source familiar with the negotiations said. "It is not done," the source said. The Oakland Raiders were apparently also interested in Dawkins, and the San Francisco Chronicle reported that Dawkins had agreed to a two-year deal with the Broncos. A Broncos spokesman told The Inquirer that no announcement was scheduled. A report out of Denver, where Dawkins attended last night's Nuggets basketball game, speculated that Dawkins might resume negotiating with the Eagles.

Dodgers-Manny feud getting ugly
For the Dodgers, this spring is about Manny Ramirez, with the team losing faith in his agent and vice versa, where the one player not there overshadows the dozens who are, where tempers flare not only in person but via e-mail for all the fans to read. Frank McCourt, the Dodgers' owner, exploded in anger late Thursday night at Scott Boras, the agent for Ramirez. Boras shot back, engaging McCourt in an unusually public battle for the hearts and minds of Dodgers fans, the owner and the agent pointing a finger at each other in trying to explain why the player that electrified Los Angeles last summer is absent this spring. As the rebuttals flew, the tension grew, to the point where Dodgers General Manager Ned Colletti snapped at a reporter from Major League Baseball's website and Manager Joe Torre declared he would no longer entertain questions about Ramirez as long as the player remains unsigned.

Giants monitoring Manny
Giants managing general partner Bill Neukom said Friday that the club continues to monitor the status of Manny Ramirez's contract talks closely. But the team's No. 1 executive gave no indication whether the Giants would intensify their pursuit of Ramirez if the free-agent outfielder's talks break down with the Dodgers.

More red flags for Santana
Uh oh. The Mets and Johan Santana insist it remains nothing more than caution, but manager Jerry Manuel raised more red flags yesterday by announcing the team's $137.5 million ace has been pushed back again because of left elbow soreness. "I want to be extra, extra, extra cautious with this," Manuel said after a 9-8 Grapefruit League loss to the Cardinals.

Source: Marbury's mouth delayed Celtics move
With rumors swirling all summer he would be released, Stephon Marbury phoned Donnie Walsh a week before training camp. Walsh told Marbury indeed he may be waived, but "it's not written in stone." According to a source close to Marbury, the Knicks point guard then asked Walsh if he could talk to the Celtics because he thought there might be interest. One day later, Walsh informed Marbury he was coming to training camp because Knicks owner James Dolan was not comfortable with the idea of him playing for their arch rivals, according to the source. If Marbury had held his tongue, his Boston arrival could have come much sooner. After being held hostage - in his mind - for the last five months, Marbury signed with the Celtics yesterday and after not playing a regular-season game since Jan. 11, 2008, helped the world champions post a 104-99 win over the Pacers at the new Boston Garden.

Curry explains benching A.I.
In moving Richard Hamilton back into the starting lineup and benching Allen Iverson on Friday, Pistons coach Michael Curry knows he has pulled his last available string. "Hopefully this rejuvenates us and gets everybody excited," Curry said. "Because this is the last thing we can do. Now, more than anything, it's on the players to come out and perform." If this doesn't work, if it doesn't translate into more cohesive and consistent play -- nothing will." It will be a while before we see how Iverson handles coming off the bench for the first time in his 13-year career. He was sent back to Detroit on Friday to have further tests on his back, which he injured Tuesday in Miami. Results of the MRI were negative, but the Pistons still want him to see a specialist. "We don't expect him back the rest of this trip," Curry said. Curry made it clear that in sending Iverson to the bench, he wasn't punishing or scapegoating him. But the team was 4-12 with Iverson starting and Hamilton coming off the bench, and evidence has been mounting the first unit has a better rhythm without Iverson.

Smith closer to buyout and Cavs?
Several league sources said Friday that Joe Smith and his agent, Dan Fegan, have been talking to the Thunder about securing a buyout. The Cavs have expressed interest, setting up what could be intensifying negotiations ahead of Sunday's midnight deadline for players to be released and still be eligible to join playoff rosters. But with many factors at play, including the public positions on the matter of Smith and Thunder coach Scott Brooks, it is far from a sure thing.

Avery closer to joining Rangers
Sean Avery is going on re-entry waivers Monday, the final step in the process by which the Stars are ridding themselves of the most hated man in hockey and the Rangers, mired in a slump that has made a postseason berth problematic, are welcoming him back. If, as expected, Avery is not claimed by any team lower in the NHL standings than the Rangers within 24 hours, the prodigal should be in their lineup Thursday night against the Islanders.

Inside Devils' shopping list
Devils GM Lou Lamoriello already has inquired about adding a top-line center to the team, though the available pickings, other than the Coyotes' Olli Jokinen, are slim. He will have more options pursuing a defenseman, though everyone else is, too, as Wednesday's trade deadline looms. Sources say the Flyers and Bruins are already in the bidding in case the Ducks deal Chris Pronger, and the Flyers and Penguins are among the bidders for Coyote Derek Morris, with the Devils expected to be in on each. Ed Jovanovski also has been tipped as a Devils target.

Predators in market for scorer
The Predators' winning ways since the NHL All-Star break have done more than just move the team closer to the playoff pack in the Western Conference. They've also altered the mindset of Predators General Manager David Poile, making him more likely to be a buyer than a seller leading up to Wednesday's NHL trade deadline. There's little doubt that a goal-scorer will be at the top of Nashville's wish list. The Predators scored a combined nine goals in their last two games, but scored just four in the four previous games. They are averaging 2.37 goals per game, second-worst in the NHL. Some of the scorers that might become available include Toronto's Nik Antropov, Dominic Moore and Alexei Ponikarovsky; Tampa Bay's Mark Recchi; Atlanta's Colby Armstrong; the New York Islanders' Bill Guerin; Phoenix's Olli Jokinen; and Colorado's Ryan Smyth.

Pronger for Kessel?
If you believe what you hear from various NHL sources, you can bet the Bruins had many sets of eyes trained last night on Anaheim Ducks defenseman Chris Pronger. And the Ducks were sizing up talent on the Bruins side, as well. It's believed the Ducks will deal away the multi-talented 34-year-old Pronger, and that the Bruins could be interested shoppers. That was certainly a hot topic at the Garden last night, site of the B's 6-0 victory. The obvious speculation is that the B's end of the deal would be young speedster Phil Kessel, their top goalscorer and one of the most dynamic offensive threats in the game.

St.-Pierre camp fires back at Penn
The team for Georges St. Pierre has fired back with a response to the NSAC against the allegation's from BJ Penn that the GSP Camp cheated during their UFC 94 bout by applying excess vaseline to the UFC welterweight champions body in between rounds. In the letter, Camp St. Pierre says they "vehemently deny any allegation as to the intentional and illegal use of 'grease' for Georges' benefit during UFC 94." The statement goes on in great detail, with supporting letters from St. Pierre's coaches, that it was his skill and training that made him the better fighter over Penn that night, not the application of Vaseline. The controversy stems from cornerman Phil Nurse being seen between rounds using his hands to apply Vaseline to St. Pierre's face then placing them on the welterweight champion's chest and back. Penn's camp has alleged since the incident that the application of the Vaseline was done intentionally as to give St. Pierre an advantage over the Hawaiian, thus negating his guard game on the ground. The filing by Camp St. Pierre talks in great detail about the breathing technique used by Mr. Friend that was implemented by Phil Nurse during the fight, and how this technique has been used in previous MMA fights, by other fighters as well.

Joe Lauzon out for 12-14 months
ACL Surgery
by Joe Lauzon on Feb.26, 2009, under Blog
Well, it looks like I will be having ACL surgery next week. I have had a history of bad luck with my knees. I have already had two knee surgeries… meniscectomies on both knees. Those surgeries were relatively simple because they just go in arthoscopically and shave down the meniscus. There is no stitching and no repairing done.
The surgery scheduled for next week will not be so simple. Unlike the last two times, I will need my meniscus repaired. Instead of just shaving that little piece out, they will be stitching it up and getting it to sit back in place.
To make things much worse, I need to have my ACL repaired as well. They think my torn ACL is causing my knee to shift ever so slightly and its destroying my meniscus. They could stop after the meniscus repair but its just going to happen again. ACL surgery should fix that, but its a very long rehab and my knee may never be the same again. There are three options for the surgery (patella, hamstring and cadaver). Each has different advantages and disadvantages. I was going to do the Patella but have been convinced to go the Cadaver route.
Long story short… I will be off my feet for a month to a month and a half… training SUPER light in about 4 or 5 months… training decently hard in about 9 months and fighting in around 12-14 months. Its going to be a long rehab… but thats how it goes.

Redskins' top three free-agent targets
The Washington Redskins plan to pursue Tennessee Titans defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth if he becomes a free agent tomorrow -- though it appears their salary cap situation might prevent them from signing the Pro Bowl performer -- and hope to reach a contract agreement with cornerback DeAngelo Hall before the market opens, NFL sources said yesterday. The Redskins also have significant interest in Dallas defensive end Chris Canty, according to league sources, who would be a far less expensive alternative to Haynesworth, and are seeking upgrades along the offensive line, though likely only by pursuing second-tier free agents.

Ravens unsure of signing Lewis
General manager Ozzie Newsome said the Ravens are continuing negotiations with Ray Lewis but he doesn't know whether the team can re-sign the Pro Bowl linebacker before the start of free agency tomorrow. It is believed Lewis, an original Raven who was drafted in the first round in 1996 along with offensive tackle Jonathan Ogden, wants to test the free-agent market to gauge his worth. This would mark the first time in his 13-year career that he would become a free agent. The Jets, who are expected to show interest in Lewis and Bart Scott, freed up $6million in salarycap room when they released wide receiver Laveranues Coles yesterday.

Texans in market for quarterback
Once the Texans trade quarterback Sage Rosenfels to Minnesota for a fourth-round draft choice Friday, they will have to find a replacement. In a perfect world, Matt Schaub will stay healthy and start -- and finish -- 16 games. Based on what we've seen of Schaub in his first two seasons, the odds of that happening are miniscule because he has been out of the lineup four times -- three because of injuries and one because of illness. Candidates to replace Rosenfels may be Detroit's Dan Orlovsky, Chicago's Rex Grossman, Cincinnati's Ryan Fitzpatrick, Tampa Bay's Jeff Garcia and Denver's Patrick Ramsey. A personal favorite would be Tennessee's Chris Simms. If the Texans signed him, he could be reunited with his best friend from the University of Texas, offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan. Then we could write some more about the matching tattoos they got in Austin. Simms, though, is expected to re-sign with the Titans. Too bad.

Brooks shaken by Bucs releases
In a sweeping move designed to give their younger players a chance to play, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Wednesday released five veterans including linebacker Derrick Brooks. Brooks, reached by telephone, clearly was shaken by the news. "Right now, like all of you guys, I'm just trying to get a feel for it all, trying to come to grips with it," Brooks told the Tampa Tribune. "I don't even know what to think. I'll speak to all of you guys (Thursday)." The Dodgers, Pirates and Indians are interested in signing Martinez, but the right-hander has not received an official offer, according to the newspaper.

Dodgers make Manny new offer
The Los Angeles Dodgers made another offer to Manny Ramirez on Wednesday, SI.com confirmed. The Dodgers' latest offer is like their original offer in that it's for $45 million over two years, but the new twist is that Ramirez could opt out after one year. Ramirez would be paid $25 million in 2009 and $20 million next season if he exercises his player option. This proposal may be more enticing for Ramirez because it would give him the ability to become a free agent next winter while allowing him the option of staying two years. It is believed the opt-out was added at Ramirez's reqest. There's another upgrade to this offer, as well. In the Dodgers' original $45 million proposal, he was to be paid $15 million the first year and $22.5 million the second year, with a team option for $22.5 million with a $7.5 million buyout for the third year. Ramirez was initially thought to be seeking a four- or five-year deal, starting at $25 million per season. Ramirez rejected a one-year, $25 million proposal from Los Angeles three weeks ago. The team also offered him salary arbitration in December, but Ramirez turned that down, too.

Joba may start Yankee Stadium opener
Joe Girardi hasn't announced his rotation for the season yet, but since Chien-Ming Wang, A.J. Burnett, Andy Pettitte and Joba Chamberlain are following ace CC Sabathia to start the spring, it's safe to assume Girardi will open the season that way. That means Burnett, who cost the Yankees $82.5 million, is the No. 3 starter and lines up Chamberlain to open the new Yankee Stadium on April 16. "I talked to him and he said he would take the ball any time," Joe Girardi said of Burnett. Since Chamberlain would work on April 11, he would be in line to start April 16 against the Indians at the Stadium.

Hamilton unhappy coming off Pistons bench
Rip Hamilton is trying to be the good soldier. He became the sixth man -- although he opposed it -- because he was told it would help the team. But after the Pistons fell to 4-12 with him coming off the bench after Wednesday night's 90-87 loss to the Hornets, he let everyone know that he doesn't think it's working. "The way we've been starting, is the way (Pistons coach Michael Curry) wants it," said Hamilton, who scored 24 points. "I've said I'm happy to come off the bench as long as we're winning. But we're losing. "Something's got to give. I'm all for doing whatever it takes for the team, but coming off the bench with us not winning, something's got to change." And Wednesday night's performance favored his argument. Allen Iverson, who likely would go to the bench if Hamilton were to return to the starting lineup, left with a stiff back 8 minutes into Wednesday's game and didn't return.

Some post NBA trade deadline nuggets: Before the Shawn Marion trade, Phoenix approached the Heat about the idea of dealing Shaquille O'Neal back to Miami, according to an official directly involved. (The Suns considered moving Shaq because of his $20 million 2009-10 salary.) The Suns discussed taking back what they traded for Shaq -- Shawn Marion (who could have been rerouted by Phoenix to another team) and Marcus Banks. Miami had no interest in reacquiring Shaq. ... Coaches question Celtics signing Marbury
Sources confirmed yesterday that Stephon Marbury is headed to the Celtics, not that there has been any doubt. And though Doc Rivers still can't talk about him, he did admit he's gotten calls from coaches who think the Celts are crazy to bring the guard on board. Rivers also has received some positive messages, but that didn't stop the media from asking him why the defending champs would want to add a player with such a troubled past. "Because," Rivers said, "we want to be defending champs again next year." The coach let it be known that it won't take three strikes for any new acquisition to be called out. "It's about our locker room," Rivers said. "It always has been and it always will be. If I don't think our locker room's right, it'll get right."

Suns eyeing Joe Smith
The Suns must add a player to their roster, and March 1 is the deadline for players to be bought out by their current team, sign with another and be eligible for postseason play. General Manager Steve Kerr would not comment on specifics, but said the Suns hope to sign a veteran. If they can't find help there, they'll find it in the developmental league. Oklahoma City's 6-foot-10 Joe Smith is the most likely target of the Suns and other playoff hopefuls now that Boston signed Mikki Moore, who was released by Sacramento.

Florida Panthers general manager Jacques Martin was in attendance for Wednesday night's game between the Flyers and Kings, which either means the Flyers are very interested in Panthers defenseman Jay Bouwmeester, or the Flyers are very interested in Jay Bouwmeester. For the record, Martin said he was in Philadelphia Wednesday night because his Panthers had the night off between games in Boston on Tuesday and New York tonight. What Leafs want for Kaberle
When Maple Leafs general manager Brian Burke claims he must be "blown away" by any offer in order to deal Tomas Kaberle, we now know just how high that asking price will be. In Burke's opinion, any package for Kaberle would have to include, at the very least: 1. A first-round draft pick. 2. A guy who could step in and play for our team right now. 3. A (highly regarded) prospect. Said Burke yesterday: "It would have to be a package like I paid to Edmonton for Chris Pronger." But we're losing.

Suns approached Heat about Shaq trade
Some post NBA trade deadline nuggets: Before the Shawn Marion trade, Phoenix approached the Heat about the idea of dealing Shaquille O'Neal back to Miami, according to an official directly involved. (The Suns considered moving Shaq because of his $20 million 2009-10 salary.) The Suns discussed taking back what they traded for Shaq -- Shawn Marion (who could have been rerouted by Phoenix to another team) and Marcus Banks. Miami had no interest in reacquiring Shaq. ... The Heat spoke with Portland about Jerryd Bayless and Channing Frye, but the Blazers wanted more than Marion.

Moore turned down five teams
Less than two years after nobody wanted to play for the Celtics, Mikki Moore turned down Phoenix, New Orleans, Dallas, Utah and Denver to sign with them for a pro-rated portion of the veteran minimum. The 7-footer found trying to repeat with the Celts an attractive proposition. "That, plus my role on this team and a better opportunity, and plus that ring," Moore said after his first workout with the club yesterday. "I'm turning 34 this year (on Nov. 4), so it doesn't come around too much."

Panthers scouting Flyers talent?
Florida Panthers general manager Jacques Martin was in attendance for Wednesday night's game between the Flyers and Kings, which either means the Flyers are very interested in Panthers defenseman Jay Bouwmeester, or the Flyers are very interested in Jay Bouwmeester. For the record, Martin said he was in Philadelphia Wednesday night because his Panthers had the night off between games in Boston on Tuesday and New York tonight. What's curious is the fact Martin plans on returning to the Wachovia Center Friday night to see the Flyers play Montreal. Sure sounds like a boss taking inventory before making his next purchase.

Said Burke yesterday: "It would have to be a package like I paid to Edmonton for Chris Pronger." As the general manager of the Anaheim Ducks at the time, Burke paid a hefty price to land Pronger back on July 3, 2006.

Wild negotiating with Backstrom
Goaltender Niklas Backstrom planned to speak with his agent Wednesday night to get an update on his current contract situation with the Wild. Backstrom said negotiations are being conducted between the Wild and his agent, Don Baizley. In the last year of his contract, Backstrom can become an unrestricted free agent July 1. If he isn't signed by Wednesday's trade deadline, he's a candidate to be traded because the Wild would risk losing him this summer for no compensation.

Jardine not interested in Evans bout
From MMA Fan House: MDS: Would your friendship with Rashad Evans prevent you from fighting him for the title? Keith Jardine: Absolutely. MDS: Well, let's say you beat Rampage, and then, just talking hypotheticals, maybe you beat the Chuck Liddell-Shogun Rua winner, and Rashad goes on a run, maybe he beats Lyoto Machida and keeps defending his title a couple more times after that, you win a few more fights, and you two establish yourselves as the top two light heavyweights, and Dana White, Joe Silva and Lorenzo Fertitta all sit you down and say they want you to fight Rashad for the title. You'd tell them no? Jardine: You know, a lot of things would have to happen for that to take place. That's a great problem to have. I hope that happens. We'll see what happens then. That'd be a great problem to have.

Source: New Browns execs not sold on Brady
We're hearing that the new power structure in Cleveland -- the combination of coach Eric Mangini and G.M. George Kokinis to which folks around the league refer as "ManKok" -- isn't sold on Brady Quinn as the starting quarterback. One source with knowledge of the dynamics in Cleveland says that the new power structure there is "lukewarm" on Quinn. As a result, don't be surprised if the Browns opt to keep Derek Anderson, pay his $5 million roster bonus, and let Anderson and Quinn battle it out for the starting job. Here's the key -- neither Mangini nor Kokinis need to justify the decision to draft Quinn or to sign Anderson. The new coach and G.M. can focus on what's best for the team, regardless of whether the answer is Quinn or Anderson, or neither.

Ravens owner irritated with Lewis
It appears that linebacker Bart Scott and the Ravens are moving closer to possibly getting a deal done before the midnight deadline Friday for free agency. If the Ravens sign Scott, where does that leave Pro Bowl middle linebacker Ray Lewis? That's interesting, because there is speculation that Scott could replace Lewis on the inside if the Ravens can't get a new deal done with Lewis. It would make sense because Scott is younger and runs better than Lewis. In the scheme a year ago, Scott was asked to do more than Lewis, like taking on lead blocks so Lewis could make tackles. Scott also covered tight ends and running backs in pass coverage a lot more the Lewis. Lewis apparently irritated owner Steve Bisciotti recently with his comments at the Pro Bowl about possibly playing for the New York Jets or Dallas Cowboys. Bisciotti and Lewis are friends, and Bisciotti even fired head coach Brian Billick partially because Lewis failed to support Billick. Bisciotti has had nothing but kind words about Lewis publicly with regard to negotiations, saying the team would outbid other teams and would not put the franchise tag on Lewis. But Bisciotti was disappointed that Lewis didn't show loyalty to the franchise at the Pro Bowl.

Agent: Haynesworth isn't a Redskin yet
After receiving more than 30 telephone calls and e-mails Tuesday from members of the Washington media regarding a potential deal between his client and the Redskins, Albert Haynesworth's agent, Chad Speck, felt the need to publicly address the situation. "Albert is not allowed to have a deal with another team, and he doesn't have a deal with another team," Speck e-mailed Tuesday night. "We continue to keep the lines of communication open with Tennessee. The rumors suggesting that a deal is in place between Albert and the Washington Redskins are completely false." What is true is that the Redskins are one of a handful of teams that will have interest in Haynesworth. But for whoever signs him, it isn't going to cheap. Haynesworth widely is expected to become the highest-paid defensive player in NFL history, with a deal that will defy today's economic hardships and send tremors around the league. The deal could wind up including a signing bonus in the vicinity of $40 million dollars. Washington will have interest. But so will Detroit, Tampa Bay, Tennessee and others.

Crabtree rethinking surgery
Michael Crabtree is reconsidering running the 40-yard dash for NFL scouts, the Texas Tech WR told NFL Network during a phone interview. Crabtree told NFL Network that running the 40 is "a 50-50 deal," and will re-evaluate whether or not he will work out for scouts at a time earlier than his personal pro day in Dallas on March 26. It was revealed on Saturday at the NFL Scouting Combine that Crabtree -- considered the top receiver by many in this year's draft class -- had a stress fracture in his left foot that will require surgery. Crabtree then indicated that he would run a 40 for scouts, and then have surgery to repair the stress fracture. Rather than solidify his status as the top wide receiver in this year's draft class, Crabtree came to the combine and measured in almost two inches shorter than his listed height of 6-foot-3, and then medical examinations revealed the stress fracture.

Rogers wants out of Cleveland
As much as Eric Mangini has tried to change the culture in Cleveland, one of his biggest challenges now is changing the mind of Browns defensive tackle Shaun Rogers. Rogers has grown so disenchanted with the situation in Cleveland that he has asked the Browns not to pick up the $6 million option-bonus payment due to him next month, a source close to the defensive tackle said. Rogers would rather be released after one season with the Browns, despite still being owed another $15 million in guaranteed money. The Browns said Rogers hasn't asked them to be released. Cutting Rogers would be difficult to do financially. If the Browns release Rogers, they would have to count more than $9.7 million against their salary cap. Cleveland has no intention of getting rid of Rogers. It wants him back as the productive team member he was last season, when he was selected to the Pro Bowl. Mangini, according to those within the Cleveland organization, is still optimistic that he can change Rogers' mind once the two men speak. Mangini is said to have recently reached out to Rogers. Those who know Rogers say his mind will not be changed.

The recording was quickly posted on the Internet and the sales rep had more phone calls than he ever wanted to handle. Why Celtics want Marbury
After several months of being embroiled in a soap opera, the Knicks worked out a buyout of Stephon Marbury's $21 million contract today. Two NBA sources said that once the two-time All-Star clears waivers -- which is expected to be Friday morning -- he will sign with the Celtics for a prorated $1.3 million minimum contract for the rest of the season. The Celtics became intrigued with Marbury in the preseason when he averaged 8.5 points and 3.1 assists and went to the line regularly in seven games. He scored 16 points against Boston in an Oct. 21 game. In Boston, the 6-foot-2-inch Marbury would be expected to come off the bench, joining Eddie House as the reserve backcourt. He likely would defend the bigger guards and do most of the ball-handling to lessen the pressure on House. If he signs Friday, he could be in uniform against Indiana that night.

Oden injury perplexes Blazers
Trail Blazers coach Nate McMillan has joined the ranks of the confused and curious in regard to Greg Oden's injured left knee, which caused the rookie center to miss his fourth game in a row on Tuesday. "I'm where everybody else is with it," McMillan said. "I get a daily update and we thought, everybody thought, that he would be moving by now, if not playing. But things just keep getting bumped back." The injury is a chipped knee cap, suffered when Oden collided with Golden State's Corey Maggette on Feb. 12. At the time, Oden went to the floor in pain, but went on to play about six more minutes. "I just thought I would get some ice and get it over with," Oden said Tuesday. "It turned out to be bigger." Or longer, to be more precise. Initially, Oden thought he would be back for the Blazers' first game after the All-Star Break. Now, there's no guarantee he will play again in February.

Though he says he does not know whether he will return to game action this season, three-time all-star guard Gilbert Arenas acknowledged yesterday that he has been practicing at full speed with his Wizards teammates since Feb. 16 and that his left knee, which has undergone three surgical procedures since April 2007, is nearly at full strength. "I'm out there feeling like the old Gilbert Arenas again," Arenas said, shortly after Washington practiced at Verizon Center. "I'm running, jumping, dunking, feeling good. No pain, no swelling. Iverson experiment failing in Detroit
Truly, it isn't Allen Iverson's fault. He has played basketball one way for 13 seasons. He has amassed more than 23,000 points and 10 All-Star appearances doing it. The Pistons knew who and what he was when they traded for him and they did not expect him to change when he got here. They expected him to play better than he has, certainly. But they knew what they were getting. They knew they were going to have to alter their defense to protect his deficiencies. They knew they were going to have to make a hard decision with Richard Hamilton, having him come off the bench, because they knew they had to have a point guard on the floor (Rodney Stuckey). What they couldn't have known was that it just wouldn't work. And it doesn't work, as the present six-game losing streak and the freefall back to .500 (27-27) attests. Even when Iverson plays his best, like he did against San Antonio, the rest of the players on the floor with him become statues. They stand around and watch Iverson skittering all over the floor, probing for a shot. They've never had to play that way. They aren't very good at it and they don't like it.

Phil Jackson: Kobe a better leader this season
Kobe Bryant's scoring average is down again this season. He's playing better than ever. Cause and effect? "Kobe's playing as well as he did last year," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. "Most of that is simply because he's a better leader. He's more determined in that aspect." Bryant averaged a league- leading 35.4 points in 2005-06, but the Lakers lost to the Phoenix Suns in the first round of the playoffs. He averaged 31.6 points in 2006-07, leading the league again, but the Lakers lost to the Suns again in the opening round. His averaged dipped again last season to 28.3 points, but he won the league's MVP award for the first time in his career and helped the Lakers reach the NBA Finals for the first time in four years. This season, Bryant is averaging 27.6 points and the Lakers have the league's best record at 46-10 going into tonight's game against the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Lakers' loss to the Boston Celtics in the Finals last June has stoked Bryant's competitive fire, Jackson said. "I think mostly it's the drive," Jackson said. "Every game he comes out and there's a purpose these guys have to play for, there's a reason to go out there and win. There's a motivation he provides by always pressing the team forward. A lot of times it over runs guys. They're upset they're not getting as many shots. And he says, `OK come get the ball. If you want to take it from me, you've got to show me you're as hungry to score, as hungry and aggressive as I am.' "So that's the leadership he provides."

Glendale Mayor Elaine Scruggs on Tuesday defended the city's bailout of the Phoenix Coyotes, saying it's not what it appears to be. 12 News obtained city documents showing the Coyotes had not made lease payments for Glendale-owned Jobing.com Arena for the past seven months. Based on city records of past payments, the bailout could be worth up to $4 million over the course of a year. "I know who is going to pay the Coyotes' rent," Scruggs said in an interview. "The taxpayers will not lose any money." But Scruggs declined to say who was picking up the tab, citing the confidential talks between the city and potential Coyotes investors over the team's lease agreement. What Panthers want for Bouwmeester
The parameters have been set publicly, in a roundabout way, by Panthers general manager Jacques Martin as to what it would take for the Panthers to part with unrestricted-free-agent-to-be Jay Bouwmeester before next Wednesday's trade deadline. Now, it's a matter of which teams can meet those narrow parameters. It's a list shorter than the Panthers' playoff history. ''I think the priority for us right now is to improve our club, to make the playoffs this year and I don't want to disturb that,'' Martin said during a conference call Monday. So interested teams shouldn't call the Panthers with a package of picks and prospects. Florida wants roster players who can help it make the playoffs for the first time since the 1999-2000 season, get some home playoff games then boost next year's season-ticket sales. Martin has declared he would like to upgrade the Panthers' group of centers and add forward depth.

The National Hockey League reportedly has been paying some of the Coyotes' bills.

Avery to join Rangers soon
New Rangers coach John Tortorella emphasized that his players would begin operating with a clean slate. And though he could not say so because of league tampering guidelines, that clean slate will apply to Sean Avery, regardless of the opinions Tortorella expressed earlier this season while working for TSN. It's only a matter of days before Avery returns to Broadway.

Giants, Jets chasing linebacker?
Could it be possible that the Jets and Giants will be going after the same coveted linebacker in free agency? Though it's likely that the Jets will be more aggressive in their pursuit of Ravens' linebacker Bart Scott, the Giants could show interest as well.

Porter may return to Raiders
Former Raiders wide receiver Jerry Porter intends to test the free-agent market for a few days to see if any team is interested in paying him more than the Raiders are prepared to pay for his return. If no knock-his-socks-off offer comes within the first few days of free agency, Porter will sign with the Raiders, a source close to Porter said Monday. Porter spent the first eight seasons of his NFL career with the Raiders. He bolted for the riches of free agency last year, when the Jacksonville Jaguars handed him a huge contract. The Jaguars released Porter, 30, earlier this month in response to their not receiving the kind of production they expected from Porter last season.

Police: Titans' White strikes victim with belt
Titans running back LenDale White was allegedly involved in an altercation during an incident earlier this month in Denver, but on Monday the city's district attorney refused to prosecute the case. The Denver police department said the case has been reviewed and "is closed." According to a police document where an aggravated assault offense was reviewed, the incident took place on Feb. 14 in Denver when White and other parties were involved in a verbal altercation after a minor vehicle accident. White then allegedly struck Leslie Joe Hoch, a white male. "The verbal argument turned physical and (White) began striking and shoving the victim," the offense report said. According to the report, White, listed as an unknown suspect, "began striking the victim with a belt and belt buckle" before the parties got in their vehicle and fled. Hoch required hospitalization for lacerations, the offense report stated.

Three teams still eyeing Marbury
Could Stephon Marbury's rocky career with the Knicks officially end today? Knicks president Donnie Walsh insists that he's not looking to come to a buyout agreement when he and Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni meet with Marbury and his representatives in an arbitration hearing today in Manhattan. The Celtics, who have two open roster spots, are said to be very interested in signing Marbury. Other possible destinations are the Lakers and Heat. Walsh indicated yesterday, however, that the Knicks aren't all that interested in freeing up Marbury to sign with a possible playoff opponent.

Cavs interested in Horry
Last week's trading deadline wasn't the end of the line for possible roster moves for NBA teams and especially the Cavaliers. There still could be a big man in the Cavs' future. Mention has been made of the Oklahoma City Thunder's Joe Smith, who was traded to the Charlotte Bobcats until the deal was rescinded. Reports surfaced that Smith, a former Cavs player, would seek a buyout in time to be eligible for a spot on a playoff roster. He has since denied that to be true. Within the Cavs organization, Smith was a popular player. The team didn't particularly want to trade him, but it had to give up somebody to get somebody, and who could quibble with bringing Mo Williams here in that deal? Mikki Moore appears to be off the table with an offer from the Boston Celtics and several other teams, the Boston Globe reported. A source close to that situation said Moore has received no interest from the Cavaliers. With Smith saying he wants to stay put, where does that leave the Cavs? With an intriguing option, according to a league source: former San Antonio Spur Robert Horry. Horry, 38, a free agent, hasn't played a game this season. He made his name coming off the bench for the Spurs the last five seasons. A 6-10 forward and center, Horry has 16 seasons in the NBA. His career average is 7 points per game. In one respect, the Cavs' interest in Horry makes sense. San Antonio is the former home of Cavs general manager Danny Ferry and coach Mike Brown. If he's kept himself in shape, Horry could be a valuable insurance policy in the playoffs.

Moore expected to sign with Celtics
Mikki Moore is expected to be a Celtic by this time tomorrow, according to NBA sources. The 7-footer, waived last week by Sacramento, will by all accounts clear waivers Tuesday morning, at which time he will be a free agent. Celtic director of basketball operations Danny Ainge had no comment on the issue, other than to deny he has made a formal offer to Moore. It is known that he has spoken with Moore's representative, though the same is true for other potential free agents. But league sources insist Moore, 33, will pick the Celtics over a number of other high profile suitors.

What Leafs want for Antropov
Nik Antropov is the one Leaf who would be a comfortable fit for almost any team, with his size, his hands, his power-play ability, and a contract inexpensive by most NHL standards. Even if the Leafs have intentions of signing him as a free agent in July, they can get something for him now and in a watered down market of forwards and there should be a number of teams interested. The Leafs want a first-round draft pick for him but at least one executive thinks that's stretching his value. A collection of draft picks or a prospect is more likely.

Bellator to work with Strikeforce
You'd be hard pressed to find an avid MMA fan that didn't want to see Strikeforce lightweight champion Josh Thomson face off with East Coast standout Eddie Alvarez. While Thomson carries the belt of an organization poised to be the next serious player in the MMA market, Alvarez's popularity in recent years has run parallel to the American Kickboxing Academy product. Alvarez's fight contract was one of 42 acquired in Strikeforce's purchase of ProElite assets, touching off speculation on the 25-year-old's future home. In November, Alvarez signed a deal with Bellator Fighting Championships, whose 12-week tournament based show debuts on ESPN Deportes in April. Monte Cox, Alvarez's manager, confirmed to MMAWeekly.com last week that his fighter was under exclusive contract with Bellator and would meet his obligations to the emerging promotion, which included its first tournament pairings in April and, if victorious, the second and third rounds scheduled for May and June. If Alvarez were to fight for another promotion, it would be at the discretion of Bellator, said Cox.

Penn Vs Florian delayed, won't be at ufc 99
It’s family time for B.J. Penn, which means the UFC lightweight champion might not be back in the cage as soon as others would like. UFC President Dana White told multiple press outlets last week that Penn’s next title defense against No. 1 contender Kenny Florian was a possibility for UFC 99 on June 13 in Cologne, Germany. However, Penn’s older brother and manager J.D. told Sherdog.com on Monday that the date is not feasible for his celebrated sibling. “No, it’s too close to BJ’s last fight,” the elder Penn wrote in a text message. “He wants to spend time with his baby.” Penn, 30, welcomed his first child, daughter Aeva, to the growing Hilo clan in October 2008. However, the new father spent a substantial amount of time thereafter promoting and training for his Jan. 31 mega-fight against UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre at UFC 94 in Las Vegas. St. Pierre pummeled Penn (13-5-1) for the majority of four rounds in their 170-pound contest until the Hawaiian’s cornermen called its quits before the last stanza. Now the fighter’s camp wants Penn to receive all the time he needs to re-group for his bout with Florian. “We are still negotiating the fight,” the elder Penn said. “No date [is] scheduled, but we are thinking late July or early August.” The UFC might be anxious for their talented lightweight champion to return to the division where he’s had the most success, but Penn has always moved to the beat of his own drum. Penn, who comes from a wealthy background, has been unhindered by the usual financial burdens other fighters have had to bare. In fact, the shortest time Penn has paused between fights since his return to the Octagon in 2006 has been four months, though he’s averaged closer to half-year hiatuses in all other cases.

Marvin Harrison eyeing Eagles?
After the two sides couldn't agree on a restructured contract, WR Marvin Harrison asked the Colts to release him, a league source said Sunday night. As much as the team would rather not -- and Colts president Bill Polian acknowledged Sunday that it's a tricky situation -- Harrison is a luxury that Indianapolis can no longer afford. Now that Harrison has declined to restructure his contract, the Colts have little choice but to let him and his $13.4 million salary-cap number go. It will mark the end of an illustrious 13-year career in Indianapolis, where Harrison and QB Peyton Manning formed one of the greatest quarterback-receiver tandems in NFL history. Already the speculation about where Harrison will land is beginning. For starters, Harrison is determined to continue playing. A logical landing spot would be the receiver-needy Philadelphia Eagles, where Harrison would be reunited with his former Syracuse teammate, QB Donovan McNabb, while getting to play in the city where he lives.

Beanie a Brown?
Ohio State running back Chris "Beanie" Wells is a player the Browns are considering with the No. 5 overall pick, and his solid workout at the NFL Scouting Combine Sunday probably did nothing to dissuade them. Wells, (6-1, 235) didn't run the 40 as fast he had hoped -- a 4.59 -- but several coaches and scouts said that's about what you'd expect for a player his size. What impressed was his 10'-8" in the broad jump -- second-best at any position at the Combine so far. Scouts said he also had a good vertical jump, although results were not immediately available.

Titans up Haynesworth offer
There's still plenty of work to be done, but at least the Titans and defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth are continuing dialogue, just like they said they would. The Titans and Haynesworth's agent, Chad Speck, met here Saturday and one person familiar with the talks described them as "productive." As expected, the Titans upped their four-year, $36 million offer. Haynesworth is looking for an annual average more than the $12.3 million Vikings defensive end Jared Allen is getting from the contract he signed last year. Although Haynesworth is expected to test free agency, the Titans are going to keep trying to re-sign him until the market opens Friday. The fact that both sides are in a positive mood is a good sign. Haynesworth sincerely wants to stay in Nashville, and if the Titans make a good faith effort -- and a good offer -- I still think there's a chance he does.

Cards, Warner far apart on deal
The Cardinals and the agent for Kurt Warner appear to be creeping toward agreement on a new contract, but there remains significant ground to cover before free agency starts on Friday. General Manager Rod Graves and Warner's agent, Mark Bartelstein, spoke several times at the NFL Scouting Combine in the past few days, and it appears the gap between their points of view have narrowed, at least a little. Bartelstein is believed to be asking for a deal that put Warner among the top five highest paid quarterbacks in the league, an average of $12 million to $16 million or so. The Cardinals would like to stay in the $10 million range.

Knicks, Marbury to talk before arbitration
With the arbitration hearing between Stephon Marbury and Knicks brass still set for tomorrow in New York to dispute his $400,000 fine, the Knicks' point guard and Donnie Walsh are planning to meet privately, man to man, before the legal battle. According to a person familiar with the situation, the two will go face to face to see if they can work out a buyout settlement and avoid the legal hearing altogether. Marbury has already offered to give back $1 million of his remaining salary and drop his appeal on the $400,000 fine he got for allegedly refusing to play in Detroit. The players' association spent the weekend preparing for the hearing, in which coach Mike D'Antoni will testify. With the trading deadline over, Walsh has no reason to keep Marbury aboard. Marbury will take his $1 million giveback off the table March 1, when he'd no longer be eligible to be on a playoff roster. Marbury has told The Post the Celtics have given him a verbal commitment to sign him as a free agent.

Agent: NBA's system broken
The N.B.A.'s system is broken, David Falk says, and fixing it will require radical measures that almost guarantee a standoff in 2011, when the collective bargaining agreement expires. "I think it's going to be very, very extreme," Falk said, "because I think that the times are extreme." How extreme? Falk said he believed Stern, the commissioner, would push for a hard salary cap, shorter contracts, a higher age limit on incoming players, elimination of the midlevel cap exception and an overall reduction in the players' percentage of revenue. And, Falk said, Stern will probably get what he wants. "The owners have the economic wherewithal to shut the thing down for two years, whatever it takes, to get a system that will work long term," he said in an extensive interview to discuss his new book. "The players do not have the economic wherewithal to sit out one year."

Crosby-Ovechkin feud brewing?
There were plenty of post-game questions this afternoon about the verbal jabbering between the Caps and the Penguins. The spicy chatter continued after the game, with Donald Brashear, for example, saying "we might face them down the road in the playoffs, so we want to put in their minds that they can't beat us." Even better, Sidney Crosby was asked by Washington Post consultant Stephen Ball whether Alex Ovechkin's celebratory antics ever cross the line. "I don't like it personally, but that's him," Crosby said. "And like it or lump it, that's what he does. Some people like it, some people don't. Personally, I don't like it, but you know what, he's a good player." NBC's Pierre McGuire, situated between the benches, suggested on air that some of the Capitals' "lip service" directed toward Crosby in particular was excessive, though he was unable to get more specific, presumably due to FCC regulations. After the game, Crosby was asked about the words thrown in his direction from the Caps; "that's always the case," he said. "You know, it doesn't change from team to team." Crosby was also asked about his second-period shoving match with Ovechkin; "I don't know, I was skating to the bench and he pushed me from behind so I just gave him a shot back," Crosby said. "That's hockey, and he likes to run around these days, so that was it."

Why Flyers won't get Bouwmeester
The Flyers have expressed interest in Jay Bouwmeester, according to several sources, but the level of interest has to be weighed against a team's needs and what can and can't be done in a trade. There was a time when the Flyers were able to go after a guy and get him, no matter what it took. The salary cap changes that, and what they want to do and what they can do are very different things. The Panthers have told all callers that they won't take salary back in a trade, that they want picks and prospects. I Florida refuses to take salary back, the Flyers are out of the mix. If they will take salary back, they will also want picks and a prospect. Scottie Upshall's name has come up in the rumor mill. So has Joffrey Lupul's. Upshall is a restricted free agent at the end of the season and Lupul goes to $4.25 million for the next 4 years.

White: Corner man greased St-Pierre
UFC president Dana White tells the Canadian Press that while Georges St-Pierre was not trying to cheat, his cornerman Phil Nurse did when applying vaseline on St-Pierre at UFC 94 "St-Pierre vs. Penn 2" on Jan. 31. "I think he absolutely, positively knew that he was rubbing grease on him." White said on Friday during the UFC 95 weigh-ins. "I do. Nobody can tell me different. I watched the tape a million times." White compared the greasing incident to boxer Antonio Margarito's illegal tactic against Miguel Cotto on Jan. 24. Margarito was found before the fight to have inserted hardened gauze pads in his handwraps. Margarito and his trainer were revoked of their licenses. Why Carroll and Meyers won't go to NFL
If you want Pete Carroll to stay at USC, the latest Super Bowl coaching matchup -- Pittsburgh's Mike Tomlin versus Arizona's Ken Whisenhunt -- was right up your alley. Think Urban Meyer belongs at Florida? Then you have to love pro football's latest hiring trend: an inexperienced and relatively inexpensive coach who can relate to his players is better than the high-profile leader with the whopping price tag, especially in this down economy. For Carroll and Meyer, the NFL window of opportunity has slammed shut. That's not to say they won't ever have those jobs. It's also not to say they even want those jobs. But the dream scenarios -- huge paydays and total control of an NFL franchise -- are off the table. Carroll and Meyer have not hinted at leaving their current jobs, and why would they? Carroll makes $4.4 million per year at USC and surely could have more if he pushed for it. Meyer's yearly compensation is $3.25 million and he has a chance to win a third national championship in four years. Those guys would be nuts to walk away from what they have, because NFL teams wouldn't come close to matching either of those deals. Simply put, NFL jobs aren't what they used to be.

Crabtree disputes surgery report
The draft stock of two-time Biletnikoff Award winner Michael Crabtree took an apparent hit Saturday when his physical at the NFL scouting combine turned up a stress fracture in his left foot. NFL sources said Crabtree, the former Texas Tech and Carter star, would need surgery to place a pin in his foot and would be sidelined for 10 weeks. That would put him out of action until early May -- and the draft is April 25. So Crabtree would not be able to provide NFL teams with a clocking in the 40-yard dash. NFL teams are paranoid about drafting a player without his full workout numbers -- and speed is a minor concern about Crabtree. But the Tech All-America bristled at the report. Crabtree said he did not plan to have surgery and that he planned on running a 40 at his private workout March 26. "I don't know where that report came from," Crabtree said. "It [stress fracture] has been there for about a year and it's never caused me any pain. I can play with it the rest of my life. It won't stop me from running. I'm going to run." Crabtree was rated as the best wide receiver in the 2009 draft and a potential top-5 pick. But his ability to run -- and run fast -- will determine how high he goes in the first round. One NFL observer said it is not a major setback.

Dodgers intensify Manny talks
On the phone and in newsprint, the Dodgers' negotiations with Manny Ramirez are intensifying. "The conversations are more frequent and longer," said Colletti, who wouldn't say if the increased dialogue is a sign of progress. "Days are ticking off the calendar." There is no indication that Ramirez is backing down from his demands of a long-term deal. Ramirez's only known offers were made by the Dodgers -- two years at $45 million, one year at $25 million and an offer for arbitration -- but Boras said he is also in talks with other clubs. The agent said the Dodgers could be in trouble if they don't sign Ramirez.

It seems Jason Kidd will end his NBA career right where it started - in Dallas - according to a league source. Kidd had been the subject of trade rumors this season and is making $21.3 million in the final year of his contract. But the source said the Mavericks and Kidd are happy with their working relationship and the team would like to re-sign him to a more economical extension. The concern for the Mavericks in re-signing the 35-year-old Kidd is making a deal that won't damage their hopes of being a major player in the 2010 free agent market. Kidd would be expected to have a lesser role in the future as the Mavs groom their point guard of the future.

Sanchez, Stevenson, Thiago and Maia earn $40K UFC 95 bonuses
Diego Sanchez, Joe Stevenson, Paulo Thiago and Demian Maia each earned $40,000 "fight night" bonuses for their performances at "UFC 95: Sanchez vs. Stevenson."UFC 95 took place Saturday at The O2 in London. The event airs via tape delay on Spike TV Saturday night. The bonuses were down from January's UFC 94 $65,000 awards, but matched the bonuses issued at the organization's last trip to Europe, UFC 93.The bonuses were announced by the organization at the UFC 95 post-fight press conference and were confirmed by MMAjunkie.com.While the night's main event underwhelmed many fans when it was initially announced, lightweights Sanchez and Stevenson delivered 15 minutes of non-stop action. Stevenson moved forward without hesitation while Sanchez timed his counter-strikes effectively in his first bout at 155 pounds. While Sanchez did enough to earn the unanimous decision, Stevenson's ample performance helped earn the pair the evening's unquestioned "Fight of the Night."Little was known of UFC newcomer Thiago before his bout with the heavily favored Josh Koscheck. And while things weren't looking especially great for the Brazilian in the opening minutes of the contest, Thiago showed his hands are capable of ending a fight. Thiago evaded a Koscheck strike and landed a right uppercut followed by a left that dropped Koscheck to the mat. The bout was immediately halted, and despite Koscheck's protests Thiago picked up the win and the "Knockout of the Night."Brazilian jiu-jitsu ace Maia showed once again why many analysts believe he may be the next true challenger to the dominating reign of UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva. While opponent Chael Sonnen proved elusive to open the bout, Maia needed just a brief opening to secure the win. In one fluid, fight-ending movement, Maia tossed Sonnen to the floor, secured a triangle choke from top position and rolled to his back to force the tap. The move earned "Maia" the evening's "Submission of the Night," his fourth in five UFC bouts.

The 49ers want to lighten the load of running back Frank Gore in 2009, and coach Mike Singletary and general manager Scot McCloughan are talking about adding a power back to pair with the 5-foot-9-inch, 217-pound Gore. McCloughan said the 49ers are looking to the draft to fill the need, and he believes there is a deep crop from which to choose.

Colletti said he has spoken "much more" to Ramirez's agent, Scott Boras, over the last seven days than in any previous one-week period since they opened talks in November.

Bernie Williams seeks MLB comeback
Bernie Williams stepped into the batter's box at George Steinbrenner Field in Tampa Friday and started whacking line drives to the gaps. On his last swing, Williams hit a shot that cleared the wall in right, drawing applause from the crowd. "Stop it!" said former teammate Derek Jeter. "You're making us look bad." Williams, 40, has been out of baseball for two years. But he is getting ready to play for Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic, which he hopes to use as a springboard for a comeback to the majors.

Celtics, Cavs both want Joe Smith
Times are desperate, but not so desperate that the Celtics and Cavaliers are going to get into a tug of war over Mikki Moore, the one-time cup-o-coffee, 10-day Celtic. The Celtics, with Kevin Garnett's knee injury shelving him for 2-3 weeks, and the Cavaliers, with their very public inability to pull off a deal for a big man by the trade deadline, are now locked in an arms escalation that shows just how much these two contenders have each other in mind. Both would like Joe Smith, if the veteran forward is bought out by Oklahoma City.

Kidd, Mavs to talk extension

Garnett had knee trouble all season
The biggest revelation to come out when Kevin Garnett hurt his right knee vs. Utah - other than the injury - is that he has had trouble with the same knee this season. "It's been bothering him for a couple of weeks," said VP Danny Ainge. Diagnosed with a muscle strain, Garnett could miss up to nine games over the next three weeks, including two monster home games, against Cleveland on March 6 and Orlando on March 8.

Surgeon: Amare's eye may need more work
Retinal surgeon Dr. Pravin Dugel first saw Suns star Amare Stoudemire on Thursday night on a referral from team ophthalmologist Jay Schwartz, who examined Stoudemire's right eye that afternoon. Dugel said Stoudemire's vision was disturbed as badly as 20/50 and he had blood in his eye. It was clear he had a "very large" retinal detachment on the nasal side. The ragged tears indicated they were caused by trauma. Stoudemire was struck near his eye Wednesday while fouling Al Thornton but that was not a sole cause. The largest detachments were at the top of his eye and would have worsened in days, Dugel said. The eye must heal itself and could require more surgery and vision correction. The eight-week prognosis for a return to physical activity is loose, considering his job.

Door open for Plaxico's return?
At the end of the 2004 season, Plaxico Burress didn't find as many suitors or as much money as he wanted on the free-agent market. The next season, with plenty to prove, Burress tied a career-high in touchdowns and came within two catches of his best output for receptions. Two years ago, when he turned 30 and realized he wasn't going to play forever, Burress showed up early (for him) to the Giants' offseason workouts, started taking better care of his body and played through ankle, knee and shoulder injuries on the way to the Super Bowl. This year, after shooting a hole in his leg, Burress is down again and needs to prove himself once more. The motivation to get back up, according to his coach, is apparently back. "I know one aspect of it and Plaxico's been always solid about that. I know he has talked to (wide receivers coach) Mike Sullivan about it -- 'If I only can get back on the field, I want to be the kind of player that I can be,'" Tom Coughlin said Friday during his annual press conference at the NFL Scouting Combine. There are still a lot of things that must fall into place before that happens: Burress has to avoid jail time on charges of illegal possession of a firearm. He must dodge a lengthy suspension by the NFL. And his requests for a trade, which were made last week via an e-mail from his agent to the entire league, have to be withdrawn if he wants to remain a happy member of the Giants.

Teams that might take Vick
What team will take on Michael Vick? The first idea that comes to mind would be teams with strong leadership at the top and that have a role for him, maybe outside of being a full-time quarterback. The Dolphins, with their "wildcat" formation and their development of the old single-wing formation make some sense. Bill Parcells can handle the media attention and help Vick get his career moving once again. So teams that have a role and a willingness to take a chance are at the top of the list. Dallas can expand its offense and make him a part of a form of "wildcat" and use him to help make some big plays. The key here is to understand that this Michael Vick will be humbled, he will be willing to play any role and willing to do whatever it takes to get back playing the sport he loves. So don't think in terms of a starting quarterback job; think in terms of coming in and helping a team and having someone in ownership or the head coach or GM chair who can help shield the media attention and allow Vick get back to football. I think St. Louis, which is in need of playmakers and knows what he can do because its GM, Billy Devanney, was with Vick in Atlanta and knows the player and the person, could be a landing spot. Tampa might make some sense, but from what I'm hearing, the Bucs are committed to drafting a quarterback and finally putting a face on their franchise. That doesn't bode well for Vick. Minnesota might make some sense, but it would have to have a specific plan on offense. Vick proved one thing in Atlanta, that he's not a west coast quarterback. The Raiders make some sense. They love speed, and Tom Cable knows Vick from his days in Atlanta. He could be a good change-of-pace quarterback and specialty player with JaMarcus Russell. Buffalo is at a crossroads at quarterback. The Bills need Trent Edwards to stay healthy and be the Trent Edwards of the first four weeks of the season. They have an owner who's not afraid to take chances and is willing to do what it takes to win. The 49ers, as mentioned above, seem to have no interest in Vick because of his off-the-field issues, which is easy to understand. But if the 49ers think they're going to win with Shawn Hill for the long term, they're mistaken.

Where will Hudson play in LA?
The Dodgers are on the verge of another bargain-bin addition, agreeing on a one-year deal with three-time Gold Glove second baseman Orlando Hudson on Friday, according to baseball sources. The sources spoke on the condition of anonymity because the deal was pending because Hudson had to take a physical. Terms of the deal weren't immediately available, but MLB.com reported that it was worth $3.4 million and had incentive clauses that could raise its total value to $8 million. What this means for the 23-year-old Blake DeWitt remains unclear. If the Dodgers fail to re-sign Manny Ramirez, they could move third baseman Casey Blake to left field and DeWitt to third. If Ramirez returns, DeWitt probably will play off the bench or, more likely, be sent to triple-A Albuquerque.

Why Red Sox are unpopular in Japan
When Junichi Tazawa walks around the baseball fields here, there is no giant pack of Japanese reporters, as there was in 2007 when Daisuke Matsuzaka's every move was chronicled. Perhaps that's because Tazawa has yet to garner the same intense national pride and fan base. He has yet to do anything, really. Except maybe drive a small wedge between the Red Sox and their newly discovered talent pool in Japan. With the signing of Takashi Saito this offseason, the Sox have four Japanese pitchers on their 40-man roster, including Tazawa. He is the youngest and most controversial, given that he eschewed the national draft in Japan to sign with an amateur league before coming to the Sox this winter.

Why Pitt RB may drop in draft
LeSean McCoy is feeling sick, and it has nothing to do with his decision to leave Pitt with two years of eligibility remaining. To be sure, he felt bad enough when he publicly declared in November that he intended to return for his junior season with the Panthers, then changed his mind five weeks later. But maybe not as bad as he felt yesterday, or since Monday, for that matter. "Not very good timing," McCoy said. The illness caused McCoy to lose 10 pounds -- he weighed in at 198 at the combine -- and likely will prevent him from taking part in the 225-pound bench-press drill because he feels so weak. But he said he wants to compete in all the other drills when the running backs work out with the quarterbacks and wide receivers tomorrow at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Texas Tech fudged Crabtree's height
I thought he'd be taller. Michael Crabtree was supposed to be 6 feet 3 after all. That's what Texas Tech listed him at. He measured 6-1. Well, 6-1.25 if you want to get technical about it, and 215 pounds worth of a well-rounded athlete. He wasn't an overly verbose interview, which might be a bad thing if interview skills had anything at all to do with the outcome of a football game. He certainly looked the part of a playmaker even if he's not quite as tall as expected.

De La Hoya seriously considering retirement
Boxer Oscar De La Hoya is strongly considering retirement, but isn't ready to pull the trigger on his career just yet. "I'm still confused," De La Hoya said Friday in a lengthy telephone interview from his home in San Juan, Puerto Rico. "I'm torn between saying, 'It's over. 'Bye. I don't have it anymore,' and knowing if I'll be able to live with that. It's a tough decision, not easy at all." De La Hoya, 36, is less than three months removed from his one-sided Dec. 6 loss to Manny Pacquiao, when his corner called off the fight after the Filipino star battered the "Golden Boy" for eight rounds. In the seconds after the fight ended, De La Hoya found his former trainer, Freddie Roach, who directed Pacquiao's victory and had characterized De La Hoya as being too old. "You were right, Freddie," De La Hoya told Roach. "I don't have it anymore." De La Hoya revealed Friday that dramatic moment was followed by two others -- in the dressing room, where his wife, Millie, held him close and told him, "Honey, that's it," and at the hospital where his Golden Boy Promotions business partner and close friend Richard Schaefer urged him to take "no more punishment."

Franklin vs Silva set for UFC 99
Former UFC middleweight champion Rich Franklin (24-4 MMA, 11-3 UFC) and former PRIDE title-holder Wanderlei Silva (32-9-1 MMA, 2-4 UFC) have agreed to meet at UFC 99, an event that takes place June 13 at the Lanxess Arena in Cologne, Germany. A source close to one of the competitors told MMAjunkie.com the fight has been agreed upon, but not signed, and both competitors are open to doing it at a catch-weight between 185 and 205 pounds. The source also said the Franklin-Silva fight is expected to take the night's co-main event slot, possibly under a headline bout between UFC lightweight champion B.J. Penn and top contender Kenny Florian.
Silva signed with the UFC in 2007 after a long and successful run in PRIDE. Returning to the UFC for the first time since a UFC 25 loss to Tito Ortiz in 2000, Silva faced Chuck Liddell at UFC 79 in late 2007. He suffered a unanimous-decision loss, but Silva rebounded for a dominating 36-second knockout of Keith Jardine five months later. Silva most recently fought at UFC 92 in December, where he suffered a first-round knockout loss to Quinton Jackson. After the fight, Silva said he was planning to drop to the middleweight division, a weight class Franklin recently left. Franklin returns to competition for the first time since a UFC 93 main-event loss to Dan Henderson. Henderson won a split decision (29-28, 27-30, 29-28) over Franklin, who was competing for the second time since he moved from middleweight to light heavyweight last year. The move came after two losses to current 185-pound champ Anderson Silva. Franklin suffered a deep eye poke in the final minute of the Henderson fight and was diagnosed with a severely scratched cornea. As we reported last week, he underwent surgery to remove scar tissue that had accumulated near the injured area of his right eye and near the area where the eyelid meets the cheek. He's expected to be fully healed well in time for the June event.
UFC 99 marks the UFC's first-ever trip to Germany. While the UFC has yet to announce the event or any match-ups for the fight card, MMAjunkie.com first reported earlier this week that UFC lightweight Spencer Fisher (22-4 MMA, 7-3 UFC) has agreed to meet Caol Uno (27-11-4 MMA, 3-3-1 UFC), who returns to the UFC for the first time in nearly nine years, at the June event. Marcus Davis is also expected to be part of UFC 99. But despite reports putting Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic on the card, the Croatian fighter is still in negotiations with multiple organizations, including the UFC.

Celtics eyeing Smith, Marbury or Moore?
The Celtics did not acquire veteran help at yesterday's trade deadline, but they cleared more roster space by shipping little-used 7-foot center Patrick O'Bryant to Toronto for guard Will Solomon, whom they immediately sent to Sacramento. The Celtics received a future conditional second-round pick from the Kings, who also got cash considerations from Boston. The Celtics traded Sam Cassell to the Kings Tuesday. O'Bryant participated in a shootaround yesterday, then met with coach Doc Rivers and president Danny Ainge. Practice concluded 45 minutes before the deadline. "We're just creating a roster spot," Ainge said. "Free agents will come into play now and over the next couple of weeks." March 1 is the final day waived players can be acquired and still be eligible for the playoffs. Ainge declined to comment about specific free agents, but the Celtics might be interested in Oklahoma City forward Joe Smith and suspended New York guard Stephon Marbury if they are bought out of their contracts. Forward-center Mikki Moore was waived by the Kings and has attracted interest from several teams, including the Celtics, according to his agent, Mark Bartelstein, who said Ainge called him yesterday.

Why Nets didn't trade Vince
In the end, Rod Thorn's action -- or inaction, in this case -- was governed by an immutable truth: "You don't want to give good players away," said the Nets president. "I don't think you ever want to do that." But Vince Carter remained the captain of Thorn's team Thursday, in part because there was no compelling reason to dump the superstar's salary without getting anything in return, and Thorn had plenty of chances in which to do so. Everything his peers had to offer -- from Portland to Houston to San Antonio and beyond -- ranged from the impractical to the insulting. Finding a comfortable landing spot for Carter -- even if he received little in return -- may have benefited his team in the future, if it created more salary cap space. But Thorn also knew he would have severely damaged the present, not to mention alienate every fan who believes that Carter is the Nets' best hope to remain competitive

Marbury talks could heat up
Knicks president Donnie Walsh said yesterday he believes Stephon Marbury's situation could heat up with the trading deadline in the league's rearview mirror. "As I've told you before, I've dealt with his agent, and I'm sure it'll get a lot more serious as we go forward because the trading deadline's over," Walsh said. "In Stephon's case, I think that most teams just figured why would we trade for him when they're going to cut him, 'cause that's been publicized for so long. "So there weren't teams calling up trying to get him as much. There were some but not a lot." Marbury has to be on any new team by March 1 to be eligible for the playoffs. "I'm hoping that we can come to a mutual conclusion, where it's good for him and good for us," Walsh said.

Why Cavs-Suns deal failed
The Cavs did talk to Phoenix about Shaquille O'Neal. The Suns were interested in Wally Szczerbiak's expiring contract, along with younger players such as J.J. Hickson, Sasha Pavlovic and a draft pick. Cavs GM Danny Ferry won't confirm it, but it's believed the Cavs were willing to part with Ben Wallace and Pavlovic. Having Wallace and O'Neal on the same team and their contracts taking a $35 million bite out of salary cap next season? No way. The Cavs need to re-sign Varejao, and he'd be in the five-year, $50 million range. They need a younger big man. Wallace and O'Neal not only would preclude keeping Varejao, it would be a salary-cap choke chain, meaning they could not sign anyone else of that caliber.

Jets making room for Ray Lewis?
The Ray Lewis rumors got a lot louder Thursday night. "They must be targeting a linebacker, probably from Baltimore," Bowens said in a phone interview. Panthers may still trade Peppers
I think Julius Peppers is gone. The Panthers can tie him up and lock him down. But I don't expect them to. The rules say that a team has to give the Panthers two first-round draft picks. The rules lie. The Minnesota Vikings gave Kansas City one first-round pick and two-third round picks before the 2008 season for their star franchise pass rusher, Jared Allen. Both Peppers and Allen had 14 1/2 sacks last season. If the Panthers, who are coming off two strong drafts, can get three picks, one in the first round, for Peppers, they should jump. The Panthers will take the best deal they can get. There are some intriguing combinations. My source wouldn't identify the four teams on Peppers' list. He would say only that one of the teams was Dallas, that one was in the AFC and two were teams to which the Panthers would not want to trade Peppers. The latter indicates that the teams are on Carolina's schedule next season. The AFC team? I'd guess Miami, Houston or New England.

Browns-Bucs trade brewing?
A lot of the talk at the combine is centering around the Bucs and their quarterback position. Few believe the Bucs are ready to just hand the starter's job to Luke McCown, so the question is, who they will bring in to challenge McCown for the starter's job. Free agents such as Byron Leftwich, J.P. Losman and Patrick Ramsey are all being thrown around as possibilities but one possibility that is gaining steam would have the Bucs trading with the Browns for Derek Anderson. Anderson has one of the strongest arms in the league as well as just about every physical tool you need to be a difference maker at his position. What he doesn't have is a great understanding of defenses or the game's nuances. With a little work and a bit of a push he could be developed into one of the game's better quarterbacks and word is the Brown might take as little as a third-round pick for him. When you consider that he's younger than Luke McCown but has more experience than McCown it doesn't sound like a bad option for the Bucs to consider, especially with Jeff Jagodzinski running the offense.

Colts to part with Harrison
Everyone keeps focusing on WR Terrell Owens' future with the Cowboys. But the more pressing issues surround Colts WR Marvin Harrison. It's no longer a question of if Harrison, 36, will be let go. It has become a question of when. It will happen in the coming days, certainly before the new league year starts a week from Friday, but few are sure exactly when. But make no mistake: It is happening. The Colts no longer can afford to carry Harrison, who is scheduled to have a $13.4 million number for an Indianapolis team that is starving for more salary-cap room to deal with free-agents-to-be such as CB Kelvin Hayden. If the Colts were to release Harrison, his $13.4 million number instantly would come off the books, saving the team $7 million against the cap. Harrison still would count $6.4 million in dead money, but more importantly, there would be the $7 million savings. Plus, the Colts have been bracing for this day, drafting Anthony Gonzalez in the first round and grooming young WRs Roy Hall and Pierre Garcon. The Colts' first-round draft pick in 1996, Harrison will finish his Indianapolis career with 1,102 catches for 14,580 yards and 128 touchdowns. It was a great career. The last chapter soon will be written.

Rangers consider roster tweaks
With the NHL trade deadline two weeks away, Western Conference teams are scoping out the Rangers -- and vice versa. But pressed up against the salary cap, the Rangers can probably only tweak their roster, possibly adding the Stars' Sean Avery if the former Broadway pest is not grabbed on recall waivers on a team below them in the standings. They also could sign a low-rent defenseman, especially with Paul Mara's injured shoulder expected to keep him out or performing well under 100 percent until past the deadline. Some in the organization believe that if defense prospects Corey Potter and Bobby Sanguinetti aren't going to play regularly in New York for the rest of the season, they should continue gaining experience in Hartford.

Teams eyeing Ducks, Kings talent
With the March 4 trade deadline approaching, will the Ducks and Kings be buyers or sellers? Both teams are still within reach of the playoffs and it's hard to predict what may happen. An unusually large contingent of scouts from opposing NHL teams have been on hand for last week's contests in Southern California. Ten scouts from nine NHL teams were at the Honda Center on Wednesday night, presumably keeping an eye on potential talent. At Monday's Kings- Atlanta Thrashers game, 11 scouts were on hand. Among Wednesday's scouts were representatives of some of the NHL's leading teams. The Philadelphia Flyers, who are fourth in the Eastern Conference, sent two scouts to Anaheim. The league's best team, the Boston Bruins, had one scout in attendance. So did the Chicago Blackhawks, fourth place in the Western Conference.

Leafs most likely to be traded
The Leafs, it's needless to say, have only one untouchable on their roster, and that's Luke Schenn. Otherwise, any player could be had, with different trade values assigned to them all. The four players believed to be most in play, however, are rearguards Pavel Kubina and Tomas Kaberle, and forwards Nik Antropov and Dominic Moore. Kubina and Kaberle both have no-trade clauses and time on their contracts beyond this season, while Antropov and Moore are both pending unrestricted free agents. Interestingly, the approach on all four is likely to be very different. For Kaberle, don't listen too closely to what Burke is saying publicly. He's trying to set a market. But the approach the Leafs will take is that they will decide what they must get in a deal - let's say a first round pick and a top prospect - and then only listen to offers that hit that standard Otherwise, Kaberle stays, at least until next February when his value might be even higher. With Kubina, you get the best deal you can knowing you can always trade him in the summer when his no-trade evaporates. San Jose wanted him last winter and his value hasn't dropped, but if Burke has to wait until the draft to move the big blueliner, he'll wait. With Antropov, the Leafs will take the best offer. Antropov's going, and the value on his services will be set by the number of teams Burke can get interested in the tall Kazakh. Finally, Moore is the trickiest scenario of all. Teams are going to want him, and he's having a very strong season. But do the Leafs? They plucked him off the waiver wire last winter, and if they could get a second rounder or the kind of young player with size and toughness that Burke wants, chances are they make the move. What's a bit unclear is whether the Leafs intend on signing him if he isn't moved before the deadline.

UCLA losing recruit to USC?
With highly touted Fairfax High big man Renardo Sidney set to announce the college of his choice on Sunday, it appears that UCLA has dropped out of the running, sources said. As recently as a few days ago, the Bruins were thought to be a frontrunner to sign the 6-foot-11 senior, who is widely considered to rank among the 10 top prep players in the nation. There was some question about whether Sidney, who has not taken the SAT, could qualify academically. But little more than 48 hours from his announcement, it was not confirmed why the Bruins lost interest. The sources who said UCLA was out of the picture required anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly. Sidney might now be headed across town to USC. Sidney and his parents met Wednesday with USC Coach Tim Floyd, Athletic Director Mike Garrett and two other school officials.

Miami rescinding top recruit offer
Top national football recruit Bryce Brown said he has decided to take his last of five official visits to the University of Miami -- but that decision might be too late. Citing an anonymous source ''involved in recruiting the running back,'' The Associated Press reported UM will not reissue its athletic scholarship offer to Brown when his national letter of intent expires Wednesday. Brown wrote Tuesday night on the website poten tialplayers.com that he planned to visit UM during spring practice March 3-5 ``to see how the coaches interact with the players at practice and look at how the new offense is coming along. And most importantly spend some time with my brother [UM linebacker Arthur Brown].'' Bryce Brown, a running back rated by Rivals.com as the nation's No. 1 overall prospect, also officially visited Missouri, Oregon, Clemson and Tennessee. He wants to make an unofficial visit to LSU the weekend of Feb. 27. Brown declined to choose a school Feb. 4, known as National Signing Day. However, the signing period officially ends April 1.

Bradford back in 2010?
Not only was former Sooner center Jon Cooper not surprised quarterback Sam Bradford returned for his junior season at Oklahoma, Cooper fully expects the Heisman Trophy quarterback to stay for his senior year, too. That could change, but right now, there's no thought of leaving in his mind. He's the quarterback at OU. Nothing beats college life. I miss it already, I tell you that much. There's nothing bad to say about it."

Dana White hints at Evans v Machida in the UK
Dana White has promised exclusively on Setanta Sports that The UFC will stage a title fight on British shores ‘this summer’.January 2008 was the last time UK fight fans witnessed a title fight, when BJ Penn destroyed Joe Stevenson at UFC 80 in Newcastle. Since then, main events have included Matt Hughes v Thiago Alves, Michael Bisping v Chris Leben, and Dan Henderson v Rich Franklin – none of which were five-rounders. With Bisping’s next fight against Henderson set for UFC 100 in Las Vegas, White has confirmed the summer UFC event in the UK will be headlined by a title fight – most likely to be Lyoto Machida vs Rashad Evans. Penn v Florian is pencilled in for UFC 99, GSP v Alves for UFC 100, Silva v Leites for UFC 97, and Lesnar v Mir for UFC 98, leaving Evans’ first title defence the obvious option. White also confirmed that Machida would get his shot 'this summer'. “British fans always terrorise me about showing title fights in the UK,” White told Setanta Sports News. “The answer is this...yes there will be a big event in the UK this summer and yes it will be a title fight.” The UFC president also had a message for Scottish fight fans, promising to take a UFC event north of the border by the end of 2010. “There will also be a card in Scotland, I thought we might manage it this year, maybe we still will – but yes it will definitely happen soon.”

Sanchez scoffs at Penn fight
Diego Sanchez is likely to fight B.J. Penn for the belt sometime in the summer, potentially in June at UFC 99 in Germany. Sanchez, though, scoffs at the match and said the fight will weaken the public's perception of the championship. "I beat Kenny Florian in, what, two minutes and 30 seconds?" Sanchez asks. "I went out there and dominated him. I beat him up bad, worse than you've ever seen, and you know what? He didn't even land a punch on me. I did something that not even [former UFC lightweight champion Sean] Sherk could do. I gave him the worst beating of his career." Florian, though, is a vastly different fighter now than he was then, though it's nothing Sanchez wants to hear.

Kimbo limbo over?
The Kimbo Limbo is finally ending. On Oct. 4, last-minute replacement Seth Petruzelli knocked out YouTube sensation Kimbo Slice in 14 seconds, live on CBS. EliteXC, the promotion that brought mixed martial arts to prime-time network TV, didn't last much longer. Ailing parent company ProElite closed down most of its operations and reduced itself to a skeleton crew. For four months, multiple interview requests went unreturned, and fighters such as Slice and Gina Carano were left idle. Strikeforce recently bought many of ProElite's assets. The deal can bring several fighters back into action after an agonizing wait. Cris "Cyborg" Santos, poised to face Carano after some dominant wins, has come to terms with Strikeforce, as has EliteXC middleweight champion Robbie Lawler. Also out of limbo is Showtime, CBS' premium cable channel, which aired many EliteXC events. Strikeforce, which already has a deal with NBC for late-night programming, will mark its new relationship with Showtime with a live card April 11 featuring MMA pioneer Frank Shamrock against Nick Diaz. Scott Smith, who twice faced Lawler in EliteXC, will fight Benji Radach. The rest of the card is undetermined while Strikeforce nails down contract details with many of EliteXC's top fighters. Near the top of Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker's wish list: Carano, an explosive fighter and ubiquitous sports media presence.

UFC 97 will play in Montreal
A UFC 97 event planned for the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, has reportedly been saved. Lat week Canadian officials said the UFC could not conduct the April 18 "UFC 97: Redemption" card with the UFC's current rules. However, according to corussports.com, a French-language website that has covered the series of events, the UFC will prohibit foot stomps at the commission's request, but elbow and knee strikes will not be banned for the upcoming pay-per-view show. The commission's current policies only apply to boxing, kickboxing and something called "mixed boxing" that does not include MMA. The policies do not provide regulations on the use of a cage.

The Jets left themselves perilously thin at inside linebacker, releasing veteran backups David Bowens and Brad Kassell - moves that could mean they're clearing the deck to pursue Lewis or Ravens teammate Bart Scott, another inside linebacker. "They must be targeting a linebacker, probably from Baltimore," Bowens said in a phone interview. New coach Rex Ryan, previously the Ravens' defensive coordinator, knows Lewis and Scott as well as anyone. Ryan has only one experienced inside linebacker under contract, David Harris, so it doesn't take a genius to connect the dots.

Lions wine & dine Stafford

The potential No. 1 pick in the draft dined at an Indianapolis steakhouse with the Lions brass: president Tom Lewand, general manager Martin Mayhew, senior personnel executive James (Shack) Harris, coach Jim Schwartz and offensive coordinator Scott Linehan. The Lions are expected to do the same with a prospect each night at the NFL scouting combine. They need much more than the standard 15-minute combine interview to vet potential top picks.
