Packers won't retire Favre's jersey in '09
Packers President Mark Murphy said at Saturday's Fan Fest that the Packers don't plan to retire quarterback Brett Favre's No. 4 jersey this season. "Obviously we will do it," he said. "We've made that commitment. He deserves to have his number retired. I just think both sides need some time. Quite honestly, from a practical standpoint, we've had to cancel one retirement ceremony already. I think it's smart to make sure he is retired rather than going through a situation like that again." The Packers planned to retire Favre's jersey last September, but the quarterback came out of retirement and was traded to the New York Jets. He announced his retirement from the Jets last month. Murphy didn't rule out extending an offer for a personal services contract to Favre. The Packers reportedly offered Favre a 10-year, $20 million deal last summer before the quarterback decided to come out of retirement.

Cutler's parents' Denver home for sale
A day after Denver Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler put his house on the market, his parents have done the same. Cutler's parents live about two miles from the home he put up for sale on Friday, in the town of Elizabeth. Cutler's home is in Parker. Their home is listed at 4,144 square feet with four bedrooms, three baths and a three car garage. It has a price tag of $835,000. Cutler's Parker home is three years old, has four bedrooms and six bathrooms. It is 5,149 square feet and has two fireplaces. It also has a three-car garage. Offseason workouts for the Broncos are scheduled for next week at Dove Valley, but there is speculation Cutler may not show up.

Why Seahawks traded Peterson
The Lions have confirmed they have traded defensive tackle Cory Redding and a fifth-round selection in next month's NFL draft for Seattle Pro Bowl linebacker Julian Peterson. The deal, which is contingent on both players passing physicals, went through after Redding agreed to restructure the seven-year, $49-million deal he signed with the Lions in 2007, according to Foxsports.com. Seattle reportedly was working on trading or releasing Peterson, a former player at Michigan State, after he refused to take a pay cut in his $6.5-million salary for this season. Peterson, a 6-feet-3, 240 pound strong-side linebacker, has been to five Pro Bowls.

Agent: Patriots sign Galloway
The agent for wide receiver Joey Galloway has confirmed that the Patriots have reached a one-year deal with Galloway. Galloway's agent, Shawn Trell, confirmed the news, which was first reported by Tampa radio station WDAE. Via email, Trell said that Galloway's decision to join the Patriots was "simple" because it was a "compelling opportunity to play for a premier owner, organization, team and coach."

Holt nixed Rams-Titans trade
The Tennessee Titans were on the verge of completing a trade for St. Louis Rams wide receiver Torry Holt yesterday, sources close to the situation informed the National Football Post. The NFP has also learned that the deal between the Titans and Rams fell through because Holt refused to restructure his current contract. Holt's refusal not only caused the potential trade to fall apart, but also led to his release from the St. Louis Rams earlier today.

Yankees, Cubs scouting A's Crosby
Bobby Crosby has been playing some third after the A's traded for Cabrera, auditioning for a job. So far, he looks very stiff at third, and according to one scout, "You can tell he's resisting this with every bone in his body. He wants to play short, and that shows in his body language." The Yankees and Cubs have been watching, but neither has bitten.

Reliever to pick between Dodgers, A's
Free-agent reliever Joe Beimel is weighing his options and could soon ink a deal. Beimel, who spent the past three seasons with the Dodgers, is considering offers from the A's and Padres, according to ESPN.com. The Dodgers and Rockies have also reportedly shown interest in the veteran lefty.

Economic crisis concerns Selig
With opening day approaching and the economic crisis deepening, Commissioner Bud Selig says he is increasingly concerned about how significantly baseball might be affected. "I used to think we were recession-proof. I really did," Selig said during the Angels' 6-4 victory over the Chicago Cubs. "This is different. Some economists are saying it's the worst downturn since the Great Depression." The commissioner's office has advised clubs to plan for three scenarios -- attendance even with last season, a 10% drop in attendance and a 20% drop.

Twins, Giants join race for Pudge
The Twins and Giants have emerged as new potential landing spots for free agent catcher Ivan Rodriguez, joining the Astros and hometown Marlins, SI.com has learned. While declining to discuss the teams, Rodriguez said, "Some teams are calling ... You'll find out pretty soon." The new possibilities, Minnesota and San Francisco, were identified by a source with a National League team in the bidding.

Bernie Williams accused of assault
Soft-spoken former Yankee star Bernie Williams declared his innocence but shared no details Friday after a woman accused him of smacking her inside a San Juan bar. A spokesman for the All-Star center fielder denied the charge made by a Puerto Rican TV personality, who claimed Williams hit her in the face as she tried to snap his picture. Williams told reporters "a very unfortunate incident" had occurred - but the beloved former Bronx Bomber declined to say anything more. "There's a part of me that wants to go out there and say my side of the facts," Williams said in Miami. "I think I'm going to let the process take its course." The incident, at about 2:30 a.m. Thursday, involved the 40-year-old four-time World Series winner and ex-model-turned-TV host Jeanie Carrion, a local newspaper reported. The pair were inside Shannan's Pub, a popular San Juan sports bar, where Williams went to play his guitar at the invitation of a local musician, said Steve Fortunato, the ballplayer's manager. Bar owner Bill Duggan said security told him the woman snapped repeated pictures of Williams, who repeatedly asked her to stop. "Eventually, he reached to grab the camera. She just wouldn't stop," Duggan said. "I'm told he might have hit her with his elbow." Duggan said the woman asked Williams for her camera and $300 - which the ballplayer paid before they both left the bar. The woman apparently filed her complaint later.

Kings to Anaheim? Pacers to KC?
According to an NBA executive, there is growing concern inside the Kings organization that if their arena issue isn't resolved, they could end up moving to Anaheim. Anaheim has been hoping to get an NBA team for years, has filled its arena for Lakers exhibition games and Clippers regular-season games, and could attract fans from as far south as San Diego. The Lakers and Clippers, however, could challenge for territorial rights fees, and it could be hard for the Kings to find a spot on television in LA, too. The financially strapped Pacers, who reportedly have lost $200 million since 1983, also could be on the move eventually. San Jose, Kansas City, Seattle, and Las Vegas are potential future NBA homes.

Spurs growing concerned over Ginobili
Spurs coach Gregg Popovich says he isn't yet concerned at the relatively slow nature of Manu Ginobili's rehabilitation from his latest ankle injury. Popovich, however, does have a timetable for becoming concerned. "This coming Thursday will be four weeks since he's off the crutches," Popovich said before Saturday's game against the Rockets. "At that point, we hope that he's on the floor working out. If he's not, we'll be concerned." Ginobili, battling a stress reaction in his right ankle, missed his 14th consecutive game Saturday. He watched from behind the bench as the Spurs outlasted Houston 88-85. Popovich says Ginobili should return "in a week or two." He is aware that is the same prognosis he gave at this time last week. "I keep saying a week or two," Popovich said. "It's like the stimulus package -- pretty soon, it's going to start having an effect."

Rangers passed on Guerin trade
Slap Shots has learned from well-placed sources that the Rangers were offered Billy Guerin by the Islanders and could have rented the 38-year-old right winger under the same terms as later were found acceptable to the Penguins - a fifth-round draft choice that would become a third with advancement to the East final. But Sather wanted something else back with Guerin for the fifth rounder, according to one individual familiar with the scenario. Islanders' GM Garth Snow, who offered Guerin to the Rangers at the captain's request, rejected that offer. Sather, we're told, never made a counter-proposal. As the deadline approached, the Islanders turned to the Penguins.

Agent: Tavares won't pull a Lindros
John Tavares will not pull an Eric Lindros or a John Elway in the coming National Hockey League draft. The fool. He will report to whichever team drafts him. He made that clear this week in an interview with Pierre LeBrun of ESPN. His agent, Pat Brisson, reiterated that viewpoint in a telephone conversation. "Assuming John goes first in the draft, I think he will go where he is chosen," Brisson said. "Let's say it's the New York Islanders. I know (owner) Charles Wang is trying to get a new building. My feeling is, it will be his way or the highway. "Look at Mario (Lemieux) when he went to Pittsburgh? There wasn't anything there. And it wasn't too nice when Sidney (Crosby) went there either. If you start picking where you want to go, you may not make the right decision. As of yesterday, the bottom five lottery teams were the Islanders, Lightning, Thrashers, Avalanche and the Coyotes. You get the impression Brisson would be happy to see Tavares in Colorado, not so thrilled with Long Island, Tampa or Atlanta.

Leafs coach: 'We're short on talent'
At the NHL trade deadline, Dominic Moore went to Buffalo, Nik Antropov went to New York and the Maple Leafs' offence went AWOL. In the five games since the ol' gang got busted up and Toronto traded two of its top four scorers for draft picks, the Leafs have managed only eight goals. Since Moore and Antropov were healthy scratches on the eve of the deadline, you can take that drought back six games, a stretch over which they've tallied a grand total of 10 goals. When it comes to finding the net, the Leafs have gone from high-speed to dial-up. "We've lost some very important people and the guys we put in our lineup aren't even known as being goal scorers at the minor-league level," said coach Ron Wilson, explaining the dry spell. "We're missing Tomas Kaberle on the point on the power play (which is 1-for-16 since the deadline). We're missing Niklas Hagman. Systems don't score goals. Sometimes you need some talent in the lineup as well. And we're a little bit short there."
Toronto Star
Kolzig OK with trade
Goalie Olie Kolzig said he is not bitter about being dealt to the Maple Leafs at the trade deadline. It would be understandable if he was. Kolzig put off retirement to sign with Tampa Bay but said he sees the situation as half full. He said he and his family "fell in love" with the Tampa Bay area and likely will keep their St. Petersburg home. And if he decides to retire after the season, "When everything is said and done, I can say I finished my career with the Leafs and my last game was a win in Montreal. That's not a bad way to finish."

Bengals want Coles to replace Housh
T.J. Houshmandzadeh's two little girls forecast the future Friday when they were presented with tiny No. 84 Houshmandzadeh jerseys in Seahawks colors upon their arrival via Paul Allen's sea plane. Their daddy said yes to Seattle on Monday and goodbye to a Bengals team he leaves as the third-most prolific receiver ever. "Nothing is going to change," Houshmandzadeh said Monday. "I'm going to line up with either one guy in front of me or two. I'm going to run the route and I'm going to catch the ball. Just like I've done and more. I guarantee it." What's guaranteed is that the Bengals are looking to replace their most consistent third-down receiver with another veteran and they're waiting for long-time Jet Laveranues Coles to fight through the East Coast snow to reach Cincinnati on Tuesday for a visit. A league source said the Bengals reached out to Coles over the weekend and he couldn't get on a flight Sunday.

Why Redskins dumped Taylor
The Washington Redskins yesterday released former Pro Bowl defensive end Jason Taylor after he declined to participate in the offseason workout program at Redskins Park, team and league sources said, ending a brief and unproductive union that cost the team a second-round pick in the upcoming NFL draft and a sixth-round pick in 2010. Taylor rejected owner Daniel Snyder's request to have a workout clause added to his contract, which would have resulted in the three-time all-pro receiving a bonus, believed to be $500,000, if he took part in most of the conditioning program scheduled to begin March 16 at the complex. Taylor, who makes his year-round home in Miami, would have made $8 million during the final year of his contract next season, not including a $500,000 roster bonus he was scheduled to receive this week. Snyder's insistence about the proposed new contract language surprised Taylor, sources said, especially considering the Redskins and Taylor's agent, Gary Wichard, had agreed both sides would honor the final two years of the deal, without any restructuring, before Taylor was traded from Miami to Washington on the first day of training camp last July.

Taylor could return to Dolphins
The Dolphins today have no intention of making overtures to Taylor or his agent. The team is eyebrows-deep in locking up new center Jake Grove to a five-year contract and making sure it has enough salary cap space to conduct other business throughout the offseason. Adding a salary like Taylor's is not in the budget and therefore not in Miami's immediate plans, according to an informed team source. But ... Are the Dolphins absolutely, positively shutting the door on Jason Taylor? Is there zero chance he returns to Miami? Did the JT express leave the station last year, with no chance of ever stopping back again? No. There is indeed a scenario under which the Dolphins would welcome Jason Taylor back. By the way, when I asked about Taylor late Monday, I expected the answer to be a quick and decisive, "No thanks," so we could all move on to the next order of business. But that wasn't the answer I got and these next few facts surprised me. First, the idea that Taylor cannot be welcomed back to the Dolphins because he and football czar Bill Parcells had a falling out last year just prior to his trade to Washington is not correct. Taylor, in fact, has talked and spent time with Parcells a couple of times since the trade. Parcells has nothing against Taylor. Secondly, the Dolphins don't dismiss the idea Taylor still has something substantial left in the tank.

Chargers shopping Cromartie?
On his way to a team-record 10 interceptions in 2007, Antonio Cromartie supplanted Drayton Florence as the Chargers' starting right cornerback. Now their correlation may be coming full circle. According to league sources, the Chargers plan to put Cromartie on the trading block if they can sign Florence as a free agent. fter Cromartie's Pro Bowl campaign in '07, Florence was allowed to leave via free agency. He signed a six-year, $36 million contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars. But he was released last month and notified the Chargers through his agent he would like to return. The sides are talking now, and a deal could be in place this week. Cromartie suffered a serious slide in production in 2008. He injured his hip in the season opener -- which he later called a fracture -- and had just two interceptions. If he is not traded, 2009 is considered a make-or-break year for him with the Chargers. The departure of Cromartie and arrival of Florence would not necessarily mean Florence would regain his starting job. In fact, it appears more likely Antoine Cason would move into that role.

Pedro Martinez wants to pitch in the majors this season, but the three-time Cy Young winner prefers retiring to his fishing boat if the alternative is accepting a Tom Glavine-like contract. Glavine, Martinez's former teammate with the Mets, signed with the Braves for a base salary of $1 million.

Crosby wants out of Oakland
Oakland's lengthy attempts to land a new shortstop came to fruition Monday when the A's signed free-agent Orlando Cabrera to a one-year, $4 million contract. That leaves incumbent Oakland shortstop Bobby Crosby, the 2004 American League Rookie of the Year, without an everyday position. A team source said that there is little chance Crosby could be traded right now, even if the A's were to pick up most or all of his salary, and that Crosby is expected to be a "super sub." Crosby, who spent much of the offseason working on his hitting with Mark McGwire, told The Chronicle, "I've never played anything except shortstop my whole life. Ever." His agent, Paul Cohen, touched base with the A's on Monday, and Crosby hopes the A's can move him.

Peavy still interested in Cubs
The Jake Peavy saga began in November and lasted through most of the off-season, leaving Cubs fans wondering if the Padres ace would be in blue pinstripes by Opening Day. It hasn't happened yet, and there's no indication a Peavy deal ever will be consummated. But there's little doubt he's a wanted man in the Cubs' clubhouse. "Love to have him," Ryan Theriot said. "That's definitely the type of player you want on your team." The Cubs are waiting for the Ricketts family to close its purchase of the team before deciding whether to re-explore the possibility of acquiring Peavy. Talks have not resumed since the last day of the winter meetings. But after throwing three shutout innings against the Cubs in San Diego's 4-2 Cactus League victory Sunday -- Peavy's final tuneup before starting for Team USA in the World Baseball Classic -- he still sounded like a man who'd readily leave paradise for Wrigley Field. "Obviously, Chicago was a team that I did have an interest in playing for, and I respect [general manager] Jim Hendry and the organization," he said. "I respect a lot of the players they have and feel like they have a good bunch, and obviously [it's] a great city. [Those] were reasons I identified the Cubs as a team I wanted to be a part of if I had to move on from San Diego."

Is end near for Iverson?
Allen Iverson is in the final season of his contract making $20.8 million. I think he could be another Latrell Sprewell, who just walks away though he could play because he doesn't want to deal with the major pay reduction, or change in role or limited playing opportunity. Most GMs I talked to automatically felt someone would take a shot at Iverson. They pointed to the glamour market teams like Miami or New York, most likely. Maybe a one-year deal in a place like that. Iverson probably has a good chance to get a mid-level exception for a year or two, a salary in the $5 million range.

Raptors running Bosh out of Toronto
If any team is devising a strategy to run out your best player, it has to be the Toronto Raptors, who now have Chris Bosh playing the biggest and strongest guys with Jermaine O'Neal traded. So this week Bosh was abused by Al Horford's 21 points and 22 rebounds and got knocked around by Brandon Bass Sunday night as the Raptors fell 15 below .500 in the season's major disappointment. Most around the NBA expect the Raptors to put Bosh up for bid thus summer knowing both the Knicks and Pistons, not likely to land LeBron James, could make their major offers for Bosh in 2010.

DC Comics halts Krypto-Nate shirts
Nate Robinson and his Krypto-Nate alter-ego have become such a phenomenon, DC Comics, the originator of Superman, wants a piece of the action, The Post has learned. Two days after the 5-7 Robinson spectacularly won the Slam-Dunk competition during All-Star weekend, the NBA announced plans to release a green Krypto-Nate T-shirt for sale at the NBA Store and NBA.com. One day later, the NBA scrapped its plan because of intellectual property issues with DC Comics, the originator of the Superman comic books. DC Comics' offices are located on Broadway, near the NBA Store. Robinson's Krypto-Nate scheme - designed to topple a red-caped Dwight Howard and his Superman shtick - was too close to home for DC Comics. Kryptonite is the green emerald crystal found on the fictional planet Krypton that weakens Superman. The NBA is now looking to involve DC Comics in future Krypto-Nate endeavors, according to a league source.

Blues getting Pronger back?
With the Blues on a three-game winning streak and three points out of a playoff spot, the suspense is building about any moves the team might make. For the second time in three years, Blues left winger Keith Tkachuk, an unrestricted free agent after the season, is at the center of the talk. And, almost like clockwork at the deadline, there is also speculation that the Blues are interested in reacquiring Anaheim defenseman Chris Pronger. The Blues can expect some heavy interest in Tkachuk, who has 18 goals and 18 assists this season, but if the Blues do trade him, it could signal that they're not confident in their playoff chances.

Jardine-Jackson makes no sense
Saturday night's UFC 96 from Columbus, Ohio, is headlined by the match that in some ways makes no sense. Keith Jardine could come out of the show as having beaten three of the most popular champions in the history of the light heavyweight division, and not only not get a title shot but also not even want one. Jardine is looking to play spoiler and eliminate Quinton Jackson as a title contender for training partner and best friend, current light heavyweight king Rashad Evans. That creates a nice little story to sell the match. But it's a rare example of Ultimate Fighting Championship salvaging a show, and in doing so, sacrificing a bigger pay-per-view main event that's already on the table.

Pedro won't settle for Glavine money

Suspended Carmelo defied coach
Nuggets forward Carmelo Anthony has been suspended by the team for tonight's game at Detroit. The team called it an in-game transgression, which occurred in Sunday's game at Indiana. Multiple sources said coach George Karl tried to take Anthony out of the game in the third quarter, but Anthony refused to come out, disrespecting the coach.

Shaq blasts Bosh as 'RuPaul of big men'
After Shaquille O'Neal scored 45 against Toronto on Friday, Raptors star Chris Bosh said O'Neal had benefited from officials ignoring his three-second lane violations. "I heard what Chris Bosh said, and that's strong words coming from the RuPaul of big men," O'Neal said. "I'm going to do the same thing (in their next meeting) I did before -- make him quit. Make 'em quit and complain. It's what I do." O'Neal is the only NBA player other than Stephon Marbury and Bernard King to record 40-point games with four teams. "I warned these guys he can do that," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said.

Sharks eyeing Avs' Smyth
There will be an Avalanche deal or two by Wed. - Jordan Leopold the most likely on the way out, and maybe Marek Svatos, too. But nothing yet. The San Jose Sharks did have two scouts at the game last night, though. A little birdie tells me that Sharks underachieving winger Jonathan Cheechoo could possibly be involved in some kind of deal, and this is where Ryan Smyth's name gets interesting.

Senators likely to deal Kuba
If the Ottawa Senators and Filip Kuba cannot hammer out a contract extension, the defenseman says he will have no issue waiving his no-trade clause by Wednesday's trade deadline. While Kuba said he's "optimistic" that a new deal can be reached, Senators general manager Bryan Murray did not echo those sentiments. It's looking more and more likely that Kuba will be traded to a contender who needs help on the back end.

How Chiefs leveraged Cassel trade
No doubt, this is going to be a tough sell to Patriots fans. Matt Cassel and linebacker Mike Vrabel to the Kansas City Chiefs for a high second-round draft choice (34th overall, No. 2 in the round) looks like a fleece job. It isn't. Part of the reason is that the Patriots had little leverage from the start. Interested teams knew that the Patriots weren't dealing from strength, as it doesn't take a salary-cap wizard to realize that no team can survive in today's NFL with two quarterbacks counting $29.27 million against the cap. The Patriots needed to regain leverage by getting multiple teams into the bidding, and that's where this blackjack hand didn't work out as they hoped. Outside of the Chiefs, there was little realistic action on the market. Cassel alone for the 34th overall selection seemed like a fair deal, but Pioli knows all about leverage from his time with the Patriots. Getting Vrabel was shrewd work on his part. The Patriots can't feel great about losing the 33-year-old Vrabel, a team leader who was entering the final year of his contract. Although his play declined a bit last season (down from 12 1/2 sacks to 4), he still played 87 percent of the team's snaps and the total return of what he brings to a team - versatility, toughness, locker room leadership - is valuable. Yet, again, that was the risk the Patriots took in placing the franchise tag on Cassel.

"We'll see where I end up at. I liked it here, I liked playing with these guys, but obviously they're not going to let me have that opportunity." A proposed deal had Tampa Bay trying to acquire Cutler in exchange for a first-round draft pick. In turn, the Broncos would have traded the first-round pick to New England in exchange for quarterback Matt Cassel. Broncos head coach Josh McDaniels was the Patriots' offensive coordinator last season when he helped guide Cassel, a career-long backup, to an 11-5 record and 89.4 passer rating that ranked 10th in the league. McDaniels said the team is not trying to trade Cutler. Cutler is skeptical.

Cardinals gambling with Warner?
It seemed outrageous when news of the 49ers interest in Kurt Warner broke yesterday. But the 49ers appear serious. The Santa Rosa Press-Democrat reported that the 49ers are in the process of setting up a Monday visit for Warner. NFL sources confirmed to me that Warner is scheduled to visit on Monday. It will be fascinating to watch how this plays out. The Cardinals obviously don't believe there is a suitor willing to pay Warner more than the two-year, $20 million deal they are offering. If there is one, the Cardinals have to wonder if Warner would really be willing to leave the Cardinals, where he has an offense molded to his skills. It's a calculated but gamble, but a gamble, to be sure. If the Cardinals are wrong and Warner is willing to go, they are going to take some heat. People will compare it to the spring of 1999, when the Cardinals let a handful of key players leave via free agency because the players wanted too much money.

Schilling to Cubs or Rays?
Pitcher Curt Schilling, who is mulling a comeback, told the Orlando Sentinel that he would consider playing for a championship-caliber team such as the Rays or Cubs. Schilling, 42, last pitched for the Red Sox in 2007 en route to his third World Series title. He missed all of last season and had shoulder surgery in the summer. Red Sox not interested in Pedro
This offseason, the Red Sox took chances on two veteran starting pitchers coming off injuries, signing John Smoltz and Brad Penny to low-risk deals and hoping for high rewards. But earlier this week, the club showed it had no interest in signing a third: Pedro Martinez. Baseball sources said Martinez' representatives approached the Red Sox earlier this week to determine if the club was a possible fit for the 37-year-old right-hander. Martinez pitched brilliantly for the Sox for seven seasons (1998-2004), posting a record of 117-37, and winning two American League Cy Young awards. With a five-man rotation set, Smoltz aiming for a June 1 return, and prized young arms such as Clay Buchholz and Michael Bowden providing depth, the Sox said they had no room for Martinez.

D'Antoni won't bark back at Barkley
Mike D'Antoni chose not to get into a verbal firefight with Charles Barkley over the TNT analyst's comment that D'Antoni's Phoenix teams played "sissy ball." When D'Antoni coached the Suns, Barkley, a Phoenix-area resident, used to criticize the Suns' lack of defense. "More than once," D'Antoni said, laughing. "But that's his deal. He's an entertainer." Thursday night, Barkley went after D'Antoni ball again when he discussed the Knick coach's former team during a Suns-Lakers telecast. "Just for the record (former Suns coach) Terry Porter got the shaft," Barkley said. "They brought him in to make the team play defense, but the players gave up, they did not want to play defense. As a player, players want to play like this. The great teams always play defense, but most players just want to run up and down the court. The Suns have played sissy ball for the last few years. It's fun to watch, it's exciting, but they don't have those types of players (who can play defense)."

Isles sending Guerin to contender
As exciting as the Islanders' 2-0 shutout of Buffalo was last night at the Coliseum, the greater drama occurred moments before faceoff when captain Bill Guerin was not on the bench after skating during warm-ups. That was the first tip-off of a trade expected to be announced today. A source close to Guerin, who recently agreed to waive his no-trade clause for a deal sending him to an Eastern Conference playoff contender, said the Islanders had a deal in place that awaited only his approval. The source called his no-show a "precautionary scratch" and indicated he will make his decision this morning. Another source with ties to Guerin indicated only that the team is not Boston or the Devils. Among the remaining contenders, Carolina and Buffalo have plenty of cap room to accommodate the remaining $1.025 million on Guerin's salary, and Montreal is in that approximate ballpark, as are the Rangers. An Islanders spokesman said the team will issue a statement today.

Bruins don't like Ducks' demands
Chris Pronger remains the most intriguing defenseman rumored on the market. The Ducks' acquisition of Ryan Whitney now points to their dealing the towering Pronger, but GM Bob Murray's asking price no doubt would include Phil Kessel (the Bruins won't entertain any David Krejci talk), a prospect (Zach Hamill?), and a draft pick. If Marco Sturm hadn't blown out a knee, the Bruins could consider a Kessel-for-Pronger swap, even with the age disparity (Kessel is 13 years younger). The cap era has convinced most GMs that the chances to win a Stanley Cup are fleeting and few. The idea of dealing a 21-year-old for a 34-year-old would have seemed heretical not long ago, but the Bruins have a legit shot this season. Pronger would improve their chances. Not to mention how their chances would diminish if he were to end up in New Jersey or Washington.

Wild's Backstrom to Capitals?
The Minnesota Wild could be ready to deal goaltender Niklas Backstrom. Two NHL executives told Sun Media that the Wild might deal Backstrom before Wednesday's trade deadline rather than risk losing him for nothing as an unrestricted free agent on July 1. Minnesota GM Doug Risebrough is trying to get the 31-year-old Backstrom, who is making $3.1 million US this season, signed to a long-term contract, but league sources say Risebrough has investigated what they might be able to get in return. The Capitals are at the top of the list of potential suitors.

Lightning shopping stars?
The Lightning are rumored to be dangling Ryan Malone, but it also wouldn't be a surprise to see them dish veteran winger Martin St. Louis, who turns 34 in June and has two more years left on his deal with a hefty cap hit of $5.25 million. If Malone and St. Louis aren't moved, look for rumors once more to circulate prior to July 1 that the Bolts will entertain offers for Vincent Lecavalier. After July 1, the Big Vin's contract (11 years/$85 million) converts to a no-trade.

UFC gambling on Akiyama
The Ultimate Fighting Championship's signing of Yoshihiro Akiyama represents a significant business first -- the first time a true native top-level drawing card from Japan has signed with a foreign mixed martial arts organization. There have been plenty of Japanese fighters in UFC over the years, including Caol Uno, a legitimate lightweight contender in the early days of the division (who is set to return to UFC in June); Yushin Okami, a top middleweight contender; and even Kazuhiko Nakamura came in after the PRIDE purchase in 2007. But Uno, while somewhat of a name fighter in Japan today, was not any kind of crossover star. Okami was an unknown fighter except to hardcore fans. Nakamura was known as a PRIDE regular. But he was a mid-carder, and it was joked that when PRIDE came to the U.S. for the first time before it folded, the American fans thought Nakamura was a bigger deal than anyone in Japan did. He only lasted a few fights with UFC before being sent packing.

Six teams interested in Jokinen
The Calgary Flames are looking at dealing for Phoenix center Olli Jokinen. He has a strong relationship with Calgary coach Mike Keenan from their days together in Florida. Calgary was in the mix to land Jokinen before he was dealt to the Coyotes last summer. Edmonton, Columbus, Minnesota, Montreal and Vancouver are also interested.
